Body Structure/Particular features: “The Gerberian Shepsky has a muscular build but is light on his feet. The head is long and pointed, with powerful jaws and teeth that close in a scissors bite. The face is large and broad, and often has distinctive blue eyes that sparkle with anticipation. The eye color can be a light brown, or a mix with one blue eye and one brown eye. Often the face of this attractive hybrid has a full or partial black mask. The body is long and lean giving the dog an overall elegant but strong appearance. Their ears are held high on the head and erect. The dense thick coat is soft to touch, their tail is long and bushy, and their legs are strong and slender. The Gerberian Shepsky is built for action, being lightning quick on his feet, and loves being part of a close-knit family.” – Wag! © Kathleen Egger

In Roly’s case, his right eye is blue while his left is brown. His coat is a dark silver sable with a black mask and saddle covered by a whitish piebald. His nose is also bicolor, or, as it’s known to Husky owners, Snow Nose.

Accessories: Old, worn cotton scarf (faded green)

Personality:

Protective | Playful | Obedient | Stubborn | Loyal | Neurotic | Romantic

Roly loves deeply when he lets himself love, and, to this end, he is very protective of those beings and places he lets into his heart. He is a romantic, seeing himself as a connoisseur of beauty in a world that, despite its ugliness, is filled with moments of beautiful things. When he is with someone, he endeavors to show them this as well as the beauty they possess. This makes him seem a bit silly as he gives himself over to a tendency to be playful, showering his intended with affection and gifts and suggesting wild adventures for the sake of fun. Unlike some dogs, his heart can be loyal to both pack and mate without confusion, seeing both as different sides to the same coin. To be loyal to his pack means protecting his mate and proving his loyalty to them. However, his pack leader must be strong for Roly to show them obedience. A weak pack leader will quickly learn that Roly can be stubborn in the face of weakness or boredom; a strong (preferably kind) leader will have a grateful, eager servant/soldier under their command. In the worst case scenario, Roly suffers from neurosis. Boredom will often make him destroy things and howl/bark for long periods of time. If left to his own devices for too long, Roland will seek out his own entertainment which might not be healthy for him or the pack but won’t do anything that would cause a war between the packs or fights within his own pack (usually).

Strengths: Protective, Obedient, Loyal, Intelligent, Romantic, Strong, Swift, (Nearly) Tireless

Weaknesses: Stubborn, Neurotic, Playful, Obedient, Romantic, Possessive of His ‘Things’, Boredom

Pre-group history: Roland was given to Olivia for her 16th birthday. Perhaps because she had begged her parents for the past two years for a puppy after their elder dog, Teddy, had passed, and they had finally felt the emptiness he had left behind. Or, perhaps, they realized that college wasn’t far off, and Roly (as they nicknamed him) was their last-ditch attempt to keep their baby girl at home. Either way, a friend of the family knew someone at work who had a litter of Shepsky pups, and the round piebald ball of fluff was chosen out of his sheer adorable friendliness. The Millers thought themselves prepared for a new dog, as Teddy had been with them for 12 years, but a Labrador is far different from a Shepsky, as the Millers would find out. The grooming alone was a task and a half, with Roly’s coat blowing out every summer and covering everything come winter. Olivia was an active teen, able to keep up with Roly’s need for stimulation, but her focus was also on normal teen things which frequently took her away from her pet. During these times, Roland would dip into boredom, destroying numerous dog beds and chew toys until his attention went to couches, shoes, and anything unfortunate enough to fit into his mouth. The Millers almost found it cute how he would pine for Olivia, but he would return to an obedient dog when she would come home and all was forgiven. Then, she left for college, moving into an apartment for students that didn’t allow pets. Roland sunk into a depression, and the older Millers tried everything to help him: Video calls, new toys, playdates with other dogs, medicine, and, lastly, getting him a friend. The cat survived, but Roly was put outside for the remainder of his stay at the Millers’ home. Their attitude towards him changed. He was no longer this beautiful, loyal dog–he was a killer. Dangerous and unmanageable. Too much for two people entering their 40s to handle. They asked friends who’d adored Roly over the years if they wanted him, but the cat kept coming up. If he attacked a cat, what would he do to kids? By the time a month had passed, Roly was beyond miserable. Olivia stayed away; the Adults barely did more than feed/water him; the fence was only 6 feet tall. One morning, Roly tore off his collar and sailed over the fence in search of adventure. His paws took him to a city where he heard talk of many packs but only one grabbed his attention. To this pack, he went, seeking the purpose and acceptance he so craved.

Voice: He sounds like what polished obsidian looks like: Dark with the weight of such a low register but lacking the dangerous edge some voices at this level have.  If he were a human, he could get a career on utility truck commercials, extolling the merits of the vehicle with his voice alone.
