After Horus's confrontation she had tried to keep an ear out. Horus as a seeing hunter had more success, but she had tried. She had tried - she told herself. They both had.
It turned out their effort wasn't enough.
On one night a certain cat didn't come home. Venia had assumed that he was still hurt about his mother. She had ASSUMED. She had been wrong.
Horus had gone out to fetch him, specially as the weather turned for the worst. She didn't think the cub wanted to be found; that maybe he want some alone time. She had been wrong there too.
When the unsightly return of the caracal came in view, she couldn't believe it.
In the warmth of the candle light, the worst was visible.
Venia excused herself.
Horus went and fetched Ronald, the adoptive father. Venia went and fetched the adoptive mother.
It gave her time to think.
Horus escorted them over when Ronald was done, though she doubted the tiger really was. No one wanted to believe it had happened.
She couldn't believe it.
