Description
Just a quick sketch. A pair of lazy Dimetrodon. I want to try something different this time, so they are "acting" (doing nothing hehehehe), instead of being a flat, rigid study as I usually do. ^^Related content

Well they are synapsids, which is a reptile with mammalian features.

Yes, J. Michael is right. Dimetrodon is a mammal-like reptile.

Great job. I especially like the pose of the one in back. I've seen my bearded dragon do the exact same thing.

Me encanta tu estilo.

:-D I have to say that I think they probably had some kind of scales, but tiny ones, so they aren't visible at the scale I used for the draw

It's abit controversial as to wether they actually had scales or not, I think.
They're closer to mammals than conventional reptiles, and other synapsids from the later permian (one from russia) have been found to have glandular, bald skin, shown by impressions in the fossils.
So perhaps (granted, dimetrodon is more basal) giving them a bumpy, glandular skin starting to lose the scaly look, like on the paws of cats and dogs? Then again, some rats have scaly tails, and armadillos have scaly(ish) skin where there's no armour, so scales are still feasible enough.

I think they shouldn't be scaled as living reptiles too, but a smooth scalyish skin, not glandular yet, is maybe the more logical choice, since they are quite basal.
A glandular skin would appear for termorregulation, if I'm not wrong, and that's come after the animal have a high metabolism rate ("hot blooded"). Probably synapsids from late Permian have that kind of metabolism: many of them seems to be active hunters (gorgonopsians, cynodonts, etc.).
Dimetrodon, in the other side, have that high sail in the back, probably for termorregulation, so glandular skin maybe hadn't appeared yet, at least in sailed pelycosaurs.

Ah, hadn't considered that. Dimetrodon was a cold-blood, most likely, at least according to Bakker. So, I suppose the early permian synapsids may have had scales, if they were cold-blooded. After all, you may as well have tough skin if there's no glands.
Considering that, maybe the glandular skin came in around the time of Biarmosuchus and Eotitanosuchus, when they showed a more warm-blood "look".
Thanks for the discussion, I really hadn't thought about it like that . Now we just need to nail down when "fur" came in with the synapsids

Than you too for the discussion, it has been very constructive.
About fur, this is just speculation, but I like to think that Permian glaciation was a good reason to develop fur.

Indeed. That would make sense. Perhaps in the days of dinocephalians and dicynodonts.
