The answer tech to lightsaber. I wonder why because Cortosys was not used? Un less it is cheaper to go tech than moter nature? Any ideas?

I believe this could be a modification of the electrostaff used by the IG 100 Magnaguard, as they could resist lightsabers.
Most likely took the general technology and shaped it into this Riot Baton, as it design is more versatile and easier to carry than a staff.

I dig it. Like the Tonfa with a gun inside. It exist. Also a Tonfa with the spike? Just outgrowth of the basic weapon.

Cortosis was my first thought, but as just a riot control baton for normal use why would they put cortosis in it? Couldn't work that out and if the First Order has discovered tech that can defeat a lightsaber where does that leave the good guys if they start making stormtrooper armour out of it? Something that was done for cinematic effect might just have been a step too far for fan liking.
Unless anybody knows better of course

I don't think canon material ever says Cortosis is lightsaber-resistant as it is in Legends. Maybe they had to make something new at the cost of the beleaguered Legends content.
I may be wrong, however, and there could be canon sources depicting Cortosis as both a blaster- and lightsaber-resistant material.

Cortosis comes in two grades. One is able to shut down the lightsaber. The other just protects you from it. Before Disney took over this was cannon. Now they said forget it. This info appears in the game Knights of the Old Republic. And in the comics, some of them. It also states that the higher grade, the more money is worth. Hence the vibro blades of the era of the KOTOR used the cheap one.

Not actually that different in form to a modern police baton.
