Description So I spent most of yesterday ogling the work of the master artist Kawase Hasui, who was declared a national treasure for reasons that are really freakin' obvious if you look at his work.

(Seriously, go google him. I'll wait.)

He did beautiful portraits of an urbanizing Japan. I am in awe. Each one looks like the background for a glorious movie, possibly by Studio Ghibli, but seriously, SOMEBODY make movies set on those.

Awe in me tends to lead to homage, and I have nothing more suited to put into such a piece than the odd little spirits that occasionally show up in my work. I still don't quite know where they belong.

This is a view the field in front of the house, which is currently overrun with Queen Anne's Lace, and the spirit is a little more akin to the Chatham Rabbit, which was once famous, than to the desert jackrabbits I usually paint. My local spirits are small and I do not always know what they want, but sometimes I feel them there nonetheless.

I am exceedingly curious about how you achieved such a beautiful wash for your background. What mediums did you use for this? How did you get your lines so crisp?

This is awesome! I could totally lose myself in this picture without even trying . After reading Digger I should expect stuff like this, but the surprises keep coming.

Ooooh... this is really lovely!

And I can't believe I hadn't come across your DeviantArt account before now! As an avowed fan of your works, both literary and visual (and combined - hi, Digger!) I remonstrate playfully with myself XD

Thank you kindly for the many years of pleasure you have brought me. Here's to many more!

Light and laughter,

I greatly like this.

"Kawase Hasui... was declared a national treasure for reasons that are really freakin' obvious if you look at his work."World treasure, if you ask me.Β  Hasui is up there in a class with Hokusai or Hiroshige.Β  Hmm... The Three Hs?

I like the little spirit, taking a moment out of his busy schedule of doing... whatever.Β  I see these guys, too, sometimes.Β  I can't capture them the way you do, though!

The little character reminds me very very much of the storybook character in Chobits. Each book Chii buys tells more of the story of "The One For Me And Only Me" Not of Studio Ghibli *smiles*

If you want a tip of your own you can google the artist and author Sven Nordqvist. He is really good at making little silly animals and really funny and fantastic landscapes inspired by the swedish countryside.

Beautiful. I love Hasui's prints. Though he's a bit later than most of the artists I favor, the crispness and color of his prints is stunning. This is a lovely homage.

I've admired his works for years.. You made a good choice.Β  When I was in high school we had a teacher who would share art books with us and his workΒ  Hasui'sΒ  woodcuts was one of the choices we had when we had our chance to try the technique.Β  I don't remember what I did but my teacher kept my art piece because he said I did good. Never pursued that avenue... its a long detailed skilled work.
