Character Name: Maria ‘Dice’ Veladakis

Nationality: Greco-American

Age (at time of death): 24

PERSONALITY/QUIRKS

Dice has perfect pitch and started plucking at the strings of her grandfather’s guitar with chubby hands for years before she began formal vocal training. She grew up on the protest songs of the latter half of the 20th century and feels strongly that there are some issues which people will only take notice of if they’re brought home with powerful, catchy melodies. But she is also young and romantic, and has a soft spot for bittersweet songs.

Dice’s main weakness is her hot temper. Ruled primarily by her passions, she has a habit of jumping to incautious conclusions and then rashly acting on them, for good or bad. This abrasiveness has led to a number of uncomfortable situations in the past and tends to drive acquaintances away, although close friends know that Dice’s mutable emotions will usually swing just as quickly to repentance and/or forgiveness.

Dice also has a fondness (read, weakness) for games of chance and a strong belief in fate (something that has been shaken slightly since her death). Her most treasured possession when she was alive was a set of ‘lucky dice’ that Arion had given her in high school, worn on a chain around her neck.

INTERESTS/MOTIVES

In life, Dice believed strongly in taking up just causes, but her manner of death has soured her a little. She has become, if not outright selfish, at least a little more self absorbed. She accepted Lethe’s blessing with some enthusiasm, eager to loose the emotional pain attaching her to her death. But even without her memories, she still can feel betrayal’s sting pricking at her soul.

If she regained her memories, she would feel the need to vindicate herself and work through the experience, but she would have no desire to return to the surface world.

Unfortunately, there can be no emotional growth for the dead.

ABILITIES/SKILLS

Dice is not a fighter. Of any sort. She might possibly be able to kick someone where it hurts when pressed, but she has had a soft life, died an untimely death, and has no knowledge of combat or self-defense.

She was in decent physical shape at the time of her death though, more out of concern for her figure than for any practical reason.

She has retained her ability to detect perfect pitch and can still sing, although she does not know how she still knows the tunes and words when Lethe took everything else. Perhaps she does not truly remember, but instead is singing a new song?

HISTORY

In life Dice was part of a self-made band ("Erinyes Wept”) and was the band’s primary lyricist. She has a good voice, suited to the type of songs she likes to write, and typically stood as the band’s front man, although she often shared the spotlight with Arion Vergotis, the other founding band member and one of her oldest friends.

Erinyes Wept had been picked up once before by a Greek producer, but before the band could take advantage of it the financial downturn (and possibly other things, such as the Knossan tsunami) caused the label to go bankrupt. It took a lot of hard work, determination and luck for the band to work their way back to the edge of the spotlight. They were eventually picked up by a small American label (Sisyphus Cat Records) directed by Marc Hermes, who was as impressed with their persistence as their songs.

Something to note: Arion and Dice were an on-again/off-again couple. There was no denying that there was chemistry between the two, but Arion's flirtatious personality and Dice’s hot temper meant that they were often at odds with each other when romantically involved. They attempted to remain ‘just friends’ several times but would always fall back to each other…only to be thrown back into the loop. However, up until the day of Dice’s death, they had never actually experienced what one could term a ‘true betrayal’.

MANNER OF DEATH

Dice died due to her own clumsiness, or at least, to extreme circumstance. Even she will admit that. But while Dice’s death was accidental, the circumstances surrounding her death left an indelible sting of betrayal on her soul. (see Audition)
