Exactly. It's very common on the Internet. It's kind of sad, really.

I hope to see more tutorials like this in the future. Very simple, short and to-the-point, principle- and technique-based rather than step-by-step. You gripped my attention with the first panel, and your subtle hints of humor is refreshing. Instant fav.

very helpful! i'm not sure why there are so many nitpickers, save for the fact that deviantart has become a cesspool devoid of intelligent discourse. this is a great tutorial, thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Weird question, since I'm pretty noob with digital art:
how exactly do you "carve" digitally : o
I'm sorry, this must have been really silly question > <

The "carving" method the artist mentions using is taking the same brush used to paint the hairs and then using a skin colored shade to go back over the hairs with short strokes to thin the darker hairs out.
Personally, I like to "carve" by painting the hair on a layer above the skin and then first using my brush as an eraser to thin the stubble before using a skin colored brush to sort of blend the stubble into the skin.
Essentially, "carving" is where you put down a blob of color and then use an eraser or a base color (such as the skin color, in this case) to create definintion and detail. It's a bit difficult to describe, and I'm not doing the best job doing so here, but honestly it's a technique you really have to play around with a lot before you find a method that works for you.
