I think I was terrible at explaining it, but I'm sure there are tutorials out there focusing on this technique in particular which might help you better understand it. This site has an amazing wellspring of great tutorials, thankfully, so at least the resources should be out there.
Hope I helped despite my terrible explanation, haha.

nice tutorial... might try it sometime...
hehehe nahh my skills aren't up to that yet ^^'
The only issue I have... is that the first panel is a mirror picture right? Except on the close side, he's touching his face, but in the reflection, he isn't... sorry, its just a little thing I noticed but its driving my mind crazy hehe
Anyway, nice tutorial Β

Yeah, I know he doesn't.
But I couldn't be bothered to move the hand up once I'd saved it since it wasn't the point anyway and I was going to bed. But it's an easy fix anyway, if it's annoying.

This looks really good, and it's a nice technique, but I wouldn't call that stubble. Maybe Panel 9, where it looks short and unkempt enough to be a couple days growth, but the rest look like short beards. I'd also say his right cheek (our left) looks like it has full growth on it. In panel 10 especially we probably shouldn't be able to see any growth on that cheek from our perspective.
Just some observations, still a nice tutorial, get's the basic technique across very clearly. Thanks for posting.

Well. The point of it all was how I do it β my technique β and if it helps anyone I'm glad! I'm aware of 'mistakes', but didn't bother much as the focus was another...Β
AndΒ what people call a stubble is just a matter of opinion, right? I'd call it heavy stubble, which is what he has! If you google stubble there's a wide range right there. (:
Thanks.

Yea, I know. Like I said, they were just observations, I get that this is a tutorial, not a finished piece. It's very nice for the purpose of example. I initially just wanted to comment on the semantics of calling that stubble, I just mentioned the 'mistake' of the thick growth on the other side of the face because I noticed it while commenting.
As for the semantics of stubble, I suppose it's not like there are defined measurements for what can be considered stubble. Still, I think stubble is generally considered to be growth that appears between shaves. Your panels 8 and especially 10 look like the beard has been trimmed and shaped, and most guys would need over a week to get that kind of growth. Panel 9 still looks like a good couple days of growth minimum, but it looks unkempt enough for him to have just not shaved for awhile, like if he was camping or something.
Anyway, it doesn't really matter, I'm not trying to criticize you or anything. At the end of the day, this is a nice tutorial with some helpful tips no matter what you call it.

Yeah, I know you didn't! I'm sorry if I sounded annoyed or something.
To me, stubble ranges from one thing to the other and isn't _only_ "growth that appears between shaves". It was my idea of it before, but then I started looking for references and reading... about stubble <_<. Because that's a good way to spend your time. And yes, most guys would need over a week to get that kind of growth - but it would often still be stubble in my opinion! Just a heavier kind not worthy of being called a beard. Anyway, none of these pictures are just a day or two of stubble.
(10 and 11 are just silly pictures and I've no other opinion than that about them ; P )
Thanks still ; )

Fair enough. I'd just never heard a neat beard called stubble before, but that doesn't mean it can't be. The technique itself is interesting, thanks for sharing it. I don't do a lot of painting, digital or otherwise, but I thought the technique of painting lines in with flesh tones was a good idea I'd probably not have thought of.

Why hello, Mr. Duckface, looking good there.
I've only drawn 5 o'clock-style stubble before, but now you've inspired me to draw some manly men with facial hair. Thanks for the tutorial!

Awesome tutorial! Anything more than a baby fuzz stubble I have tremendous difficulty doing. Most of the time I get 5 minutes into drawing the stubble and end up throwing my pencil and going, "Ain't nobody got time for that!".
