i developed a fuck ton of backstory for a Human Gems AU while drawing these-

sadly ended up scraping my Ruby despite she being my favorite and sapphire too because i just... they both looked terrible.

Jasper, Transgender woman who works for the Beach City Police Department and part times as a Life Guard at the beach on the weekends. she has many burn scars from a teen-years house fire she was trapped in, but likes to show them off proudly like 'battle scars' and likes to make up big ass lies and stories about where they ACTUALLY came from; her whole nose had been so burned and distorted, the one she has now had been rebuilt by a plastic surgeon in order for to breathe properly. Locally deputized as the Beach Bully, but will not hesitate to arrest you and escort you to the Beach City Jailhouse if you kick a kid's sand castle in front of her. Is heavily mourning the loss of her adoptive mother figure and previous Chief of Police (aka, pink diamond), though has much respect for the current one (aka yellow diamond). Frienemies of Rose Quartz, work out buddy of Ruby and Bismuth. Frequently seen wrestling with Amethyst or dragging Peridot. Has a practically overwhelming crush/unhealthy obsession for Lapis, despite their unhealthy relationship and consecutive break up.

Rose Quartz Universe, Wife of Greg Universe, Mother of Steven Universe and surrogate-parent of Stevonnie Maheswaran. low-key known as the city hippie, Rose greatly loves the environment, frequently organizing beach cleanups, seeing to the protection of the local environment, and frequently volunteering to any of the schools in the surrounding area to talk about environmental safety. deeply loves her family and is everyone's supportive, be-who-you-are mother. makes a living selling from her Floral shop, especially her signature Rose section, all hand grown organically.

Stevonnie Quartz Maheswaran, Surrogate child of Rose Quartz, their surrogate carrier. many years ago, the Maheswaran family was told they couldnt have children, despite they're best wishes. (i will not get into how surrogate embryo transfers work but Stevonnie is biologically the Maheswaran's child) Determined to have a child, the Maheswarans sought out a surrogate and found one in Rose Quartz, and thus Stevonnie was born. Rose Quartz was granted much permission to see the child as the Maheswaran family had decided not to keep the information of their birth-mother a secret and Rose Quartz was like a second mother. Years later when the Maheswaran 'miraculously' got pregnant again came Stevonnie's younger sister, Connie, named after her older sibling, just like Rose Quartz had named her own son a few years before after Stevonnine, Steven. Stevonnie sees both Steven and Connie as their younger brother and sister; they are fiercely protective. Stevonnie, Aromantic and Asexual as well as Agender, is a proud fencing competitor who would later teach her sister, is a loud advocate of self defense and personal realization and likes to volunteer at women's groups to teach self defense. She has a strong respect and idolization for Garnet, likes to play music with Greg and Dance, practice sword fighting with Pearl and Connie, and has practically no idea what they want to do when they're an adult. They'll end up teaching self defense classes for men and women surviving with PTSD, though. Stevonnie was born with Omphalocele, and has no belly button, just like Rose and Steven. instead, all three have slight, discolored indentations.

Lapis Lazuli, Beach City's number one Beach Babe and Beach Bum. Head Lifeguard and Beach Supervisor, Lapis spends most of her day on the beach and returns home with her roommate Peridot, living together like a support partnership- and possibly a couple, no one in beach city really knows- off the Universe Family's barn property. Suffering heavily from PTSD after an incident of brutality with some police and ever since struggling with an anxiety of being held prisoner and 'held captive' by just about anything even somewhat committal, and an anxiety of small or dark spaces, a final breaking point was the abusive and manipulative relationship Lapiz formed with Jasper just after the incident- Jasper being a police officer herself also did not help Lapis' issues- Lapis finally lapsed and a violent fight with jasper ensued, lapis almost drowning jasper at one point and leaving a vicious scar in between lapiz' shoulder blades; the wound ended up putting lapiz in the hospital. she's spent a lot of time recovering and bonded a lot with Peridot while she was there. Lapis has a strong desire to travel and hates personal restrictions. She likes the carefree nature of children and can frequently be found with Steven, through whom she met Rose Quartz and acquired her place in the barn.

Peridot is Beach City's local, short little Genius. Attending a University in AI a city over, Peridots life is hectic and stressful and does her anxiety no good, but its all for the sake of her robotics passion at which she excels. physically disabled, Peridot lost both her legs when she was very young to serious infections- to which she credits her affection for green, as she thought the colors of the infection were 'interesting' when she was young and thusly hadn't warned anyone, the downfall that would lead to losing her legs. Peridot was diagnosed Autistic the same day she had to have her legs amputated, but was clearly a strong Savant in tech and robotics from the mechanical build to coding and design. She met Jasper, who was recovering from her burn injuries, in that time while she was there and is one of few who knows where they actually came from. She would later lose her own left hand in the process of her robotic experimentation to to exposure of unsafe materials and resulted in another amputation. during this hospital stay she ended up in a room with Lapis lazuli, and when Peridot was deemed unfit to live alone do to her mental ailment, volunteered herself to live with Lapis (whom was otherwise going to have to stay in the hospital if she did not have anyone she could stay with). Peridot built her own legs and one-handedly built herself a new, functional hand. Her ultimate goal is to create life-changing technology for disabled people of all kinds, like her glasses, which correct a color blindness she was born with. In her downtime she enjoys hanging out with Lapis, whom she strongly supports to the best of her ability and vice verse, as well as hanging out with Jasper who will take her to her classes or to her hospital visits. Also frequently seen with Amethyst or Steven. Sometimes when Peridot is having a fit, she can get physically self destructive, clawing at her hair, scratching hard into her skin- sometimes clawing so hard into her fact she'll leave a bright red, slightly bleeding triangle in the skin of her forehead, and running your fingers across the skin, you can feel the slight embroider of it having healed over many times.

Amethyst is a rebellious photograph and paints artist, and has no particular job though somehow makes money- if you ask her why, she'll tell you she's secretly an underground wrestler, to which no one will believe. Do to Vitamin C and Rutin deficiencies, Amethyst is incredibly easy to bruise, but rather than to have caution, she takes pride in the marks and quite likes the pretty colors, and likes to show Pearl any particularly nasty bruises just to scare her and gross her out, and brush off her nagging to be careful. Amethyst is seen around town just about everywhere, making jokes and pulling pranks and swiping food. She's seen often around the gym to challenge Jasper, her long time rival and a sort of strength idol. Amethyst also spends her time with Pearl and Garnet, as well as hanging out with any of the quartz family, peridot, or anyone else she deems amusing for the day. She has an almost constant bruise on her chest, that no one's ever seen her without, and Amethyst herself doesnt know what she keeps hitting against that keeps bruising her there.

Garnet is Beach City's most famous model; particular popular for her Vitiligo and Blue Heterochromia with one red, aldino-esc eyes, Garnet plays powerfully to her gimmick as the woman of two halves. She has her own clothing line featured around her half gimmick idea, and is frequently on covers of local magazines and is an outspoken speaker of women and black women's power, and a proud speaker of many other important issues alongside her work as a model, and became popular during her scene years starring as the walking bubblegum model for her pastel blue and pink clashing styles. She has two large white circles in the palm of each hand that she also uses frequently as centers of her modeling. Her mother Ruby is the owner of the Beach City Gym and a black woman who sufferers from IED and an overwhelming Inferiority complex with a large red-ish circle tattooed into her palm with a star inside it, that she got as a mark of pride for her daughter. Her other mother, Sapphire, is blind in one eye, is incredibly pale with spidering blue veins over parts of her body and works as both a librarian and a fortune teller, suffers from an immense Anxiety disorder and is paralyzed from the waist down; like Ruby, Sapphire has a tattoo in pride of their only daughter of a blue circle and star. In response to the struggles Garnet has seen her parents face she is particularly outspoken on the topics of interracial marriage, queer relationships, self love, mental illness and getting help, and physical disabilities.

Pearl is an albino dance instructor, and a professional ballerina with a special interest in swordsmanship and spears. She enjoys all her practices and particularly sharing them with others as she teaches. She faces increible PTSD, Anxiety, OCD, and self worth issues alongside a hate for eating that can take her down roads toward anorexia to maintain her ballerina figure to most of which Garnet, Amethyst and Rose help her almost every day. Pearl for the longest time was deeply in love with Rose Quartz, even long after she married Greg that left her spiteful of him for many years, but Pearl had since learn to come to terms and reconcile with Greg with Steven, Stevonnie, Garnet and Amethyst's support. She's most comfortable nowadays at home, spending time with any of the Quartz family, Garnet and her family, the Maheshwarans, Bismuth, Peridot, Lapis and Amethyst. if you were to touch Pearl's forehead, you would be able to feel a slight raised bump in the center, a sign of a bone growth where her skull is slightly thick.

Bismuth, hulking form and all, is cousin of Rose Quartz and a welcomed friend of the family to be seen in Beach City. A traveling collector of antique weapons and a maker of them herself, Bismuth also works as a body builder and has been known to dabble in tattoos, and at one point was a Lieutenant General serving in the army- the only person other than Greg, Garnet, Garnet's parents, Amethyst, and Pearl who knows Rose Quartz was a head General, and served directly above Bismuth as an entire head of their division. Bismuth suffered from her time a minor PTSD that mainly showed itself in dissociation then the normal panic attacks, at which point she'd branch into thinking she was talking to Rose, her General, and mention something about whatever place she thought she was in back in the war, dropping line about the enemy or such an such, and sometimes manifesting to twist her morals and prompt an angry response or, even, an attack response. Bismuth spends a lot of time working out at the gym when she's in town and with her family. She has a certain fondness for Jasper, a fellow trans woman and work out partner, and for Steven, but just like she favors them some, she dissociates more with them then anyone (expect for Rose herself), sometimes confusing Jasper as an enemy general she looks a lot alike (jasper, luckily, can take her on if Bismuth reacts violently) and sometimes mistaking Steven for Rose- so often Steven has begun to figure out his mother's history on his own, though he's not brought it up with anyone. One of Bismuth's favorite war stories to tell is the time she was stabbed in the sternum and lived; she says there's a hole in the bone under the skin, still, a hole right into her chest, and got that spot tattooed, and from then on while she served, her joke was how she'd shatter threw anyone she faced, right through their chest like they'd done her- but the breaking point would be that they wouldnt be as tough as ol'bismuth.
