Description From the Files of Frank Womack, Kaiju Expert*

Kaiju File #  012

Entch

First Seen: Somalian Coastline, Indian Ocean
Last Seen: Bosaso, Somalia (Destroyed)

Primary Range:
 Indian Ocean

Dietary Preference: Thermal Energy

Description:
Entch, a short-lived leviathan monster that briefly ravaged the Somalian North, was a towering kaiju, among the tallest discovered at the time of its first emergence. Covered with chitinous organic armor with surprisingly ostentatious coloration, and armed with extendable bony clubs on the end of its arms, Entch was a capable combatant most kaiju would avoid on sight, though when confronted by monsters closer to its own size, it was surprisingly limited in how it could do battle.

Its bright pink head, unlike the rest of the body, is soft and fleshy, with two enormous pairs of tendrils stretching out almost half its entire body length, and in the event of close combat, it can use these to immobilize opponents, bringing them in close enough for it to ravage them with its truly nightmarish mouthparts. Outside of that, however, its not much to speak about. Even moreso because of its untimely demise at the infernal wrath of Stormback.

Defense Protocols: Entch died before any real studies could be taken. That said, it was likely going to be a sizable opponent for modern munitions had Stormback not shown up. Its armor plating was sturdy enough to shrug off what opposition could arrive there. Studies were taken from its corpse, and many chitin plates were collected by OVER to use in weapon testing, as were several of its black bones.

AUTHOR'S NOTES:
After the complete destruction of the center of Rio de Janeiro at the hands of Grorn , a sense of fatigue overcame the people of the free world. The grand bluster and bravado introduced in the founding of OVER, a line in the sand where man could stand against the monsters, had all but faded after not one , not two , but three  abject failures, each of which resulted in tens of millions of dollars in damages. Many advancements had been made in the art of kaiju deterrence, sure, but, the cost was pretty high. Turns out it was not about to get easier.

Almost two months after Rio, an unusual weather system began to form over the Indian Ocean. A very small, localized tropical storm that moved against air currents, straight towards the coastline of Somalia, where the Amminot  had attacked the past year. This time, however, it was a very different, and honestly much better case.

Early in the morning, about 15 miles from the ancient port city of Bosaso, an enormous form emerged from the surf, scalded and bleeding profusely. It was an undocumented kaiju, much larger than any before it, about 90 meters if I read correctly. But the reaction was less panicky than usual, it was more of a morbid curiosity. Evacuation orders were given, and thank god they were, because the creature was being pursued by a monster in every sense of the word. Stormback, a kaiju that would go down in history as perhaps the strongest monster on earth, emerged from the depths with a thundering roar, and a literal bolt of lightning. Entch, as it would later be called, was slightly taller, but did not stand a chance against the reptile. The battle, almost completely caught on film, is now the third most watched video on the entire planet. It went on for hours, ranging up and down the coastline and into the city, finally ending with Stormback's trademark ability, the photon beam, obliterating its enemy. Stormback moved further inland, heading northwest and attracting a lot of international attention before finally being deterred in Athens. Most people payed attention to that spectacle, and moved on, Entch being forgotten to history except by the hardcore kaiju buffs such as myself.

The story of what happened next with Entch is a fascinating one, to be honest. Kaiju had been killed before, but most were done in by the Amminot virus, which proved to be even more dangerous than the kaiju themselves. Entch had died from more traditional causes, and UNDER scientists were quick to study exactly HOW that was possible. I don't have access to every result they found, but I do know that they collected as much as they could. Skin, bones, chitin, the whole shebang. But they were driven away not long after by the locals.

You see, here's something not a lot of people know about kaiju. Their bones, black as coal and incredibly dense, are veined with diamond, billions of dollars worth of the stuff. It explains a lot about their ability to hold themselves together. And when people got wind of this, there was a RUSH to get out there to the body, let me tell you. The slightest scrap of bone could feed your family for years, or pretty much get you anything you wanted. A war almost broke out over it before OVER stepped in. It led to a tense standoff, lots of guns being pointed every which way. There was no end in sight there, but a solution came about in a roundabout way no one saw coming.

Diamonds aren't nearly as valuable as market price would lead you to think, you're mostly paying for the aesthetic when you buy one. So upon learning of the enormous glut of diamond in the body and the blood about to be shed, the heads of the diamond market were thrust into the spotlight by an unknown source. People knew of blood diamonds already, and the news that followed, and the immense reduction of diamond prices, cooled off the crowd, though not out of satisfaction. The global economy was far from healthy as it was.

So yeah, kaiju have world altering consequences even when they're dead. A fascinating footnote in a long, ever unfolding history. But the story doesn't have to end on a sad note!

Entch did die, sure, but the power of regeneration goes a long way. Here and now, years later, I heard quite recently of a kaiju, much smaller but of a similar appearance, being sighted in the same range. As of now, we're calling it Entchling. Here's hoping it lives a full, not hostile life.

---------------------------------

July is upon us, and with it comes the next Fathom File! Say hello and goodbye to Entch, a kaiju that's undergone many different sketch iterations before getting to what you see above you. Its been slated as Stormback's first opponent for a while now, and the battle will be a fun one to write out when I get to it one day, but originally it was going to have a very different, much more modern body plan, akin to the Muto or the skullcrawlers. In the end I decided the first heisei scale kaiju wouldn't feel right with that sort of body plan and instead opted for the more traditional body you now see.

Anyway, not much else to say here. Have a good america day, and feel free to leave a comment if you wanna talk.

Next up, the long awaited Stormback!

I like the story behind the kaiju bones being literal organic diamonds (assuming that they are organic in nature). Pretty interesting world building there, Jared. Also, for a one off kaiju, Entch has a very cool design.

Can't wait to see Stormback!

It's definitely humorous Entch is going up today, considering his colors.

Anyway, looks like you're throwing more incredible worldbuilding at us! The kaiju skeletal structure sounds very interesting. I also can't help but wonder that the top two most viewed videos are.

I try my best with the worldbuilding, its always good when someone appreciates it.

Thanks for the good words. And don't worry, the top 2 will be revealed in time.
