Approach to Combat:
-Uthegar's approach when combatting kaiju is considered unpolished, but surprisingly mindful of its surroundings. It will usually begin combat using its considerable length and aerial abilities to control the flow of battle, attacking from a distance with flare bombs and preventing its opponents from exiting its killbox. It has also shown a great reluctance for willful destruction of property without provocation. Should its target show enough skill or aggression to break free of this strategy, a far more savage, tooth and nail approach usually follows. Its mostly known for pinning smaller opponents with its tail and rending them apart with spines, highly prehensile fingers and searing lashes. Attacking from behind or while airborne rarely ends well for opponents, as its grafted 'wings' make excellent short range bladed weapons. At this point Uthegar becomes considerably more likely to cause collateral damage to the surrounding area. It has somewhat improved these rampages over time, but they are often unavoidable outcomes. It is believed this kaiju will grow even deadlier and exploit more deadly variations of attacks as it gains more experience.
Points to Target:
-Heat Vents (only when outside of civilian inhabited areas)
-Eyes
-Ridges between armor plates
-Torso
-Upper arms
Recommended Military Approach:
-The love-hate relationship between Uthegar and U.N.D.E.R.'s Admiralty is mostly due to its mostly altruistic nature in fighting other monsters coupled with its high destructive yield. One of the first giant monsters to appear, it served a valuable 'role' in the early days when anti-kaiju protocols were in their infancy. By that of course, it is meant that it was repeatedly used as a guinea pig/punching bag in many military exercises, testing the limits of what punishment kaiju are capable of taking. Despite the frequent sorties with the beast, it continued to serve its role as an ally of convenience, rarely engaging human forces at all, and so it whittled its way toward a moderate ranking on the engagement list. Should this status change, though, it is highly recommended that offensive force be sent quickly. Most artillery used today is at best only capable of inconveniencing the kaiju, but Uthegar has shown repeatedly that, unless mortally pressed, it will not engage a mechanized threat, and will often flee the scene as soon as one's energy signature can be detected. Should a traditional sortie break out, be advised to expect political resistance from U.N.D.E.R.'s KADRRE Squad, which is convinced, far more than the rest of U.N.D.E.R., of the creature's innocence despite the known death toll it possesses.
Abilities:
-Flare Bomb: A concentrated sphere of heat and Precursor Photonic energy, Phadron's Flare bomb is considered one of the most iconic of all known kaiju attacks. Exceptionally bright and difficult to track, it moves too fast for most opponents to dodge, often disorienting them while also creating searing, localized burns that halt the natural regeneration most kaiju possess. It can only produce small, concentrated spheres of the energy though, or else its own mouth would suffer from the exposure. Its aim is excellent, but it can have difficulty against fast moving targets.
-Propulsionary Locomotion: Though not as focused as a flare bomb, each of Uthegar's vents running down its body can eject a steady stream of energy. These can be controlled individually or all at once, with varying intensity that requires concentration to control. These can be used for deterrence in moments of combat, outright offense at close range, and even to propel itself faster on land. Combined with the aid of its precursor 'wings,' Uthegar can even sustain high speed flight for several hundred miles without resting. It will rarely engage directly in combat after long distance travel, however, preferring to take some time to regain energy from the sun and resting before moving in.
-Precursor Augmentation: The exact extent of this is unknown, and unlikely to ever be known due to the erased data of the process of its creation by [Name Withheld], but what is known is that Uthegar's body contains several instances of precursor design. Most obviously seen are the six wing plates sticking out of the ridges in the kaiju's back, which can individually eject and aid, through means unknown, the kaiju in combat as bladed weapons or as stabilizers in its powered flight. It is also believed to be outfitted with a means of detecting the presence of kaiju on a global scale, though the deeper under the surface of the ocean or underground, the more difficult they are to find. There is likely more to be found, but no true chance for research has presented itself as of the time of this writing.
-Neurolash: The least understood of Uthegar's abilities, the three tendrils that come out of the tip of it's tail can slip into the body of most kaiju whilst wounded and 'infect' them with a sort of biological agent unknown to modern science. The effects, typically, cause the kaiju to break into a 'fever' that makes them behave in a more reckless manner, often securing victory for the would be king of the kaiju.
Sightings:
1: Detroit, Michigan, USA: Considered by most historians to be the first true event of the kaiju age, Uthegar proudly made its presence known to the world when it appeared from above the clouds, coiling its body around the multiple spires of Arden Towers during the Phadron attacks. Its presence caused the more hostile kaiju to flee the scene, but only after a gruesome battle that ended with no clear victor. Uthegar, decapitated from Phadron's Quantum Leap, lay comatose in the streets for days before regenerating and flying off to meet its foe again.
2: Site Sedna, Arctic Circle: Uthegar, fully recovered, flew out in pursuit of Phadron to the north, where the two did battle near the hidden U.N.D.E.R. base Sedna. It ended in defeat, however, as Phadron used its abilities again to transport it to the bottom of the ocean half the world away, trapped in glacial cold.
3: Antarctica: Upon recovering, Uthegar broke free of the antarctic seas and headed north to warm up. Phadron was long defeated, however, so it did little more than amble about, dodging repeated engagements with U.N.D.E.R. vessels before disappearing in the southern atlantic.
4: Angolan Coastline, Africa: The first known site where Uthegar was observed in a non-violent manner. It attracted a lot of media attention as it moved about the coast of Angola and occasionally Namibia, and ultimately only fled due to its internal programming guiding it elsewhere. If not for that, it might have settled there for some time.
5: Precursor Temple, Brazilian Amazon Basin: Called by unknown technology, Uthegar made its way from West Africa to deep in the Amazon forest, at the site of the second discovered precursor facility, a vivarium of some sort containing lifeforms from many distinct periods of geological history. It did battle with the kaiju Armaderia here, ultimately prevailing and destroying much of the facility in the process. With nothing to guide it, it continued west to the Ecuadorian coast and turned north.
6: Alaskan Coastline, USA: Months later, Uthegar surfaced near the Bering strait, showing scars of battle. It came to rest about 40 miles west of Juneau, attracting the attention of local kaiju Tarshis and the Helix creation Gath. The three engaged in brutal melee for several hours before Uthegar killed Gath and fled west into Russia.
7: Siberian Tundra, Russia: Crashlanding and believed dead for years, Uthegar would heroically rise in the darkest hours of the Syyd outbreak, being the first kaiju to successfully destroy one of the terraforming stalks and its minions in the Siberian wastes. After recovering energy, it moved west for the final confrontation.
8: Amsterdam, The Netherlands: Uthegar, along with Grorn and Rigel, played a key role in defeating the final Syyd forces. It battled the Syyd controlled corpse of Phadron alongside the mech and the kaiju Takraw, defeating its old foe at long last, and delivered the fatal blow in an aerial duel with Stingbat before taking down one of the supporting stalks, giving Grorn its chance to destroy the alien invaders once and for all.
9: Mumbai, India: The first confirmed Uthegar sighting post Syyd, the serpentine menace emerged from the Indian ocean completely by surprise and engaged a Rasqet that had germinated in the area. It then flew southeast across Indonesia without incident, and the whole world noticed.
10: Northern Queensland, Australia: Arriving in northern Australia, it joined the benign kaiju Takraw in, surprisingly, a period of relaxation. The two were targeted by the UNUM Strain here, splitting the pair up in the conflict.
11: Western Pacific Ocean: After defeating the UNUM Mechamorph, Uthegar was last seen basking near the Ogasawara trench. The trigger happy U.N.D.E.R. Admiral Daigoro engaged the beast, prompting a violent response.
12: Tokyo, Japan: Flying inland, Uthegar rampaged through the Tokyo coastline before the benevolent guardian kaiju Karuzaku and the deployment of Rigel managed to pacify it. Calmed and weakened, it disappeared into the ocean, rarely appearing for several years.
13: Rapa Nui, Polynesia: A confirmed sighting of Uthegar, it was met on the remote island by an ancient Precursor safeguard, the kaiju Caikol. The two battled until undersea volcanic activity triggered by the pair wiped the island off the map.
14: Caribbean Sea: A peaceful, brief encounter between Uthegar and a group of whale watchers.
15: Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland: Uthegar's current resting place. Theorized to be where it originally came from, but no results have been found to back this up.
=========================================================================
It only took two months, but I'm finally back with another Fathom kaiju, and this one is quite the game changer!
First of all, if you have a good memory, you'll notice the events in Uthegar's bio don't entirely align with previous entries, especially Phadrons. This is something I will go ahead and say will likely happen again before I put the final nail in the Fathom universe's coffin, and I apologize for those who might get frustrated by this. What can I say, plans change, stories improve, and I will try my best to correct anachronisms as they come. This is only entry number three, so it shouldn't be terribly difficult this time, at least.
So anyway, lets talk Uthegar. (Pronounced Oothehgarr) If you've been following me for a while, you might notice some strong similarities this monster has to one of my oldest, cheesiest kaiju designs ever, the enormous hell dragon not!Ghidorah/Digimon Megidda from my first attempt at a kaiju story, Dark Hours. (The original image, which I liked best, is lost to the ages, so this original sketch will have to do. vagrant-verse.deviantart.com/a… )
Embarrassing as showing off my 2009 self can be, those similarities are 100% intentional. You'll be surprised to learn that I can learn a thing or two from my past.
The journey to get away from its influences was a long one, taking the better part of 2 months to do, but it was a worthwhile experience. The biggest difference is in the personality. In the Fathom universe, there is no one central monster all plots follow, but many take cues from existing tropes. And one I really had trouble with for a long time was making one that readers could root for. Grorn serves it well enough, but its not much for personality and serves the mythos best in more of a mothra role. Stormback is too bamfish and has been demoted to a more Boba Fett position. Giganuuk was strongly considered, even sketched out in a rebooted look I may use later, but ultimately had too much impact on the world right away to bring out in the universe's infancy. And Sernak, as we know him, does not fit the tone of this universe at all, sad to say. So I had to dig a bit, toying with aliens, spirits, machines and sentai figures, but ultimately I remembered something I've heard many a time.
Make something you'd like to see. Not something earth shattering and super unique.
Not that those are bad things, of course, but the primary thing should be something you enjoy seeing, something that comes naturally to you. And friends, Uthegar is what came out of this. At first it was going to be a more traditionally built tripod kaiju, but I couldn't make it not look generic no matter what way I tried it. It was essentially a giant Growlmon, an obvious influence that I wanted a bit more distance from. Then I rediscovered Megidda, and the naga body style really put in a place I personally like. I frankenstitched a couple other kaiju parts into the design as well such as vagrant-verse.deviantart.com/a… Megoki's prehensile fingers and vagrant-verse.deviantart.com/a… Skorn's head plates to give its silhouette some added distinctions. It may still be a bit on the cheesy side and a little too derivative, but dammit I had fun making him and I consider him the closest to a hero kaiju the Fathom universe has. I like religious symbolism a lot, especially when twisted around and subverted, I included a FEW leftover fallen angel allusions, without the pentagram wings this time.
As for the name, Uthegar comes from two european sources, Uther Pendragon and the all too heavily used Jaeger because I am trash. But I did not use it as a PR homage, I actually picked it for its meaning. He's a mobile, ornamentally designed kaiju for a purpose, to hunt other monsters and prevent humanity from falling too deep into enthrallment to the beasts, especially the ones that fight for our safety. I will spoil no more, you'll just have to read Underfoot when its finished.
Til next time folks. Hopefully much sooner than my last post.

The HWE one did inspire me to make this one a reality, so you were only half wrong.
