Zinna had been dreading this ability since the very beginning of class. For someone who was usually so optimistic, Zinna looked positively terrified. She couldn't fail this week, no matter what it took, Zinna had to walk out of this room knowing how to heal.

After being given some herbs by Dr. F, Zinna sheepishly walked over to a wyngling who had a small bruise on their arm and asked if she could heal it for her. The child agreed and so Zinna got to work. She gently placed a single leaf atop the discoloured skin and took a deep breath. The green gro furrowed her brows and grit her teeth, mustering all of the energy she could and trying to remember everything she learnt from the other classes. A green glow flickered wildly from her magic glands as she struggled to reach for the healing properties within the herb. She sat there for a moment, ever so slowly drawing out the power of the plant, but it became too much. Suddenly, Zinna was hit with a wave of exhaustion and her magic fizzled like a blown out candle. Her eyes slowly opened to find the wyngling's arm still with the small bruise. She could have shrivelled up with her frustration but Zinna was determined to get this right, she had come too far.

Once more, Zinna sucked in a breath and shut her eyes tightly. Again her glands glowed fiercely, again she tried to feel for the leaf, and again she failed.

'What?' Zinna thought a little hurt. The wyngling's arm remained in front of her with that slight blue colouration. She stared down at it, a slow panic starting to creep up but she pushed it down and tried again.

Over and over Zinna's magic glands would light up green and she would squeeze her eyes tight, but it was to no avail. Every time it felt like she was finally drawing out the healing power of the leaf, her magic subsided and she was left with the same result. The panic began to morph into a deep anger. Why couldn't she get this stupid ability right? Why did she even join this stupid class? She didn't need to learn any of this! Zinna was getting along just fine with her wind magic and... her angry stream of thought trailed off as she remembered what made her come here. It was Nix, her partner. He would always be the one to patch up her scratches and wounds from her adventures but one day he asked if she could try to learn to heal herself. There was an intense worry and sorrow behind his smile that night. It hurt Zinna to see that pain in his eyes. She never wanted Nix to worry, she never wanted him to feel so scared for her.

"Are you done yet?!" A sudden voice piped up. Zinna's trance broke as she glanced at the wyngling, who looked like she might keel over from boredom.

"Just one more go, I promise this will be the last try and then you can leave," Zinna pleaded. Before the wyngling could even get a reply in, her glands were already glowing again. Zinna remembered Nix's face, she remembered the pelt prowler, she remembered everything back to the Deelagun and her best friend who she lost that fateful night. Everything blurred together into a torrent of pain and she wished she could undo it all. She wanted to protect those she cared about, she didn't want anyone to worry about her. Suddenly, Zinna could feel her magic intertwining with the healing herb and she was brought back to the present. It was working. Zinna made sure to stay focused and not get too distracted by her excitement, and soon enough, the wyngling's arm was bruise free.

"I did it!" Zinna beamed.

"Yeah yeah, good job. Now get me off this table," the wyngling pressed.

"O-oh right!" Zinna hurriedly set the child down on the ground and let her wander off to wherever she needed to be. That bitter feeling of frustration and exhaustion had been replaced with a warm satisfaction. She did it, she learned how to use plants to heal. Zinna couldn't wait to get home and tell Nix all about today, to watch all of that pain and anxiety hidden behind his eyes disappear and be replaced with pride and relief. Surely now that she could use more magic Nix wouldn't have to worry so much, right?

...

Right?
