Description Here's a little something I've been working on this week. Very mixed media: crayons, gouache, Painter 8, and Photoshop Elements.

I did a crayon drawing, and reworked it digitally, the drawing can be found here:

shot by cupids bullet! i like it, but the cupid needs blending in a tad bit more

Thanks for commenting Hmmm... more blending, yeah I guess the color scheme could be more unified.

Interesting concept. I like the balance and the old look to it. Also the facial expressions are just very well executed. Like he's "Hunting"

I really like this peice. He looks very natural with his rifle, especially with your painterly technique. It's the sort of treatment that catches you off gaurd. It's as if it would be peaceful to be shot by him.

valkea In reply to GREENTENERAL [2004-11-14 07:28:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I've started making sketches for a bigger scene along the same lines. I guess it's fun in every once in a while to try to do something that takes a lot of planning and effort, when lots of modern art is really spontaneous.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GREENTENERAL In reply to valkea [2004-11-14 16:56:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but that extra effort will be worth it. If you put in the time, people will notice. So many artists think that the idea is everything, but it is nothing if it is not built right. See how far an architect can go with poor construction and poor material choices. Attention to detail can make such a big difference. I can't wait to see the bigger scene, but don't rush it. I'd rather see it in full glory.

I really like the imagery in this, its very nice.

You asked for some constructive crits on the forum so here goes:

The lack of a secnd wing is kind of disconcerting, I realize its probably hidden behind his head, but still, maybe just the tiniest peek of the edge of it would help.

The only other thing I can really see is there are some green (teal actually I think) highlights on his face and closer arm, but none of the rest of the body, it loks like they were either forgotten or accidental.

If I REALLY wanted to be nit picky the ironsight looks a bit tall but I like the picture too much to care.

valkea In reply to TheTrueApropos [2004-10-31 07:14:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for commenting. Yeah, I had a hard time with the wing. It is supposed to be behind his. I tried to include part of it, but it seemed too stuffed.

The bluish green spots in his face are left from earlier on in the coloring when I was contemplating reflections of that color, but they didn't look as good as the white did. I thought they gave some variety so I left them in.

Thanks again for the comment and the fav.

Your welcome. The image is great so I wouldn't bother changing anything unless you really want to. Like I said before I was just being nit picky because you asked for crits.

Not only is the drawing very high quality, but I like the idea. It's very clever. Is there any hidden meaning behind it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

valkea In reply to Deezer509 [2004-10-31 05:57:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's actually somewhat personal. I was part of an English student production of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream some years ago, and a lot of people got nailed over there. It's based on an earlier doodle of the same subject. I was thinking of including a Shakespeare quote in the image - but then I thought just - meh, it's more universal without.

is it overcompensation? or is it just that it's faster to nail people with an automatic than a bow-and-arrow? cupid comes into the 21st century? i like the look of classical putti and modern weapons. would be awesome if you made him part of some big old roccoco satire scene.

valkea In reply to felixxkatt [2004-10-24 19:50:32 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... might be an overcompensation, but you have to be prepared. I just thought of updating imagery to present day. Thanks for the comment I'll have consider the satirical scene. hmm...

EmmetEarwax In reply to valkea [2009-12-31 21:27:40 +0000 UTC]

Cupid was sometimes of malific intent. He had arrows of HATE as well as love. Sometimes he'd shoot an arrow of hate at one person and an arrow of love at another so that the two would clash in uproar ! In one story, he accidentally got DEATH's arrows mixed in with his own, so a person who he meant to fall in love - fell DEAD instead.

Cupid is not to be confused with EROS a cosmic Elder God, born of light and dark. The Elder Gods of the Greeks aren't referenced much in mythology, as they did their work and retreated to clear the stage for the later pantheon. CHAOS, Light, Dark, Eros, Charon, Death, Sleep, the Dreams ....and finally the Titans.
