Whoah, this is a really cool creature! He looks super fierce and majestic, great job! And thank you for providing some information on this charachter, it's really helpful when trying to understand this piece! My one point of critique on this one is that I am a bit confused as to where the light is coming from. It seems to be coming from all over the place, pretty much, as shadows go many ways. My tip for you would be to look up how light sources work, and how shadows are cast. Aside from that, I think this is a really cool painting. I really love the colour palette you have going on, the cold and strong colours really add to the wintry atmosphere. Great job, keep it up!

Thanks for the critique!

What happened is I intended for the light source to come from the front upper right, but after finalizing the shading I ended up adding a glowing paw print and light wisps that I did not originally plan to add, and I didn't go back and alter the shading afterwards to account for them. I also have a backlight there I added to "pop" his form from the shadows behind them that has no visible source. Normally, at least in my newer artworks I try to take better care to not leave problems like this, but this was intended just as a design concept sketch I wasn't going to post, and I took it further than I intended and liked the result, so I ended up posting it. I'll be more careful with lighting in the future, and I'll do some reading up on it.

Hello! I saw you post this piece in the monthly critique thread on the forums, and I thought I'd give this a go. I hope you don't mind.

First things first: I have a absolutely nothing to remark on the design (which is lovely and exciting) and your execution of it: the shading looks great and I like how you aded those rim lights so nicely. What I think bothers me a bit about the picture as a whole though, is the background being of nearly the same intensity as the foreground and of course, the main subject of your piece. Having a background that's as saturated and busy is bound to steal your wolf's thunder and optically, is looking way nearer than it has any business of being.

Some main methods of controlling depth in a picture are contrast (less of it the further it's away), less saturated colours and reduced detail (so the fuzziness really does help). There's a lot going on with the design and with the magic paw print and such so the more you can get the viewer to look at that instead of the scenery, the better it will be for the painting's purpose. If I take a look at the right hind paw, it feels suitably removed in space from myself and the wolf both, and that's probably due to the fact that its blue tone is muted some and its light and shadow values are very close together, i.o.w. its contrast is low. I think the trees behind the wolf should maybe have shadows that light at the most, because let's not forget that a white carpet of snow does actuall reflect light into those shadowy areas, making them lighter.

That's all, really! I hope this is at least a little bit useful and not too much rambling from me, and I wish you a lovely and prolific 2020 in advance!

Cheers

Thank you for taking the time to write such a in-depth critique! I'll keep in mind what you said when working on background in the future.Β

This would make amazing game art/graphic novel art or something of the sort, or even just make drawings like this for posters and prints, I'd buy it. It's so crystal clear and shiny, and so well detailed/textured I almost get the chills for real when looking at it! I love the softness of the snow and the blur of the bg in comparison to the sharp foreground. You're so good at drawing wolves too, every time I see your art, I know I'm looking at pieces of work the artist really cares about and puts tons of effort into.
