THIS WEEK ON EGO GENEROSITY: GOGO HULKS OUT, IT TURNS OUT DIDI WAS EAVESDROPPING, PABLO IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND, AND WE HAVE AN EXCUSE TO REDIRECT US SOME DAMN LIGHTNING! (and also concussive force but whatevs, homey)
Apologies to those who figured Andy got pulverized in part 7. He might have had it coming, but Didders pulled a Gandalf and did a little Balrog-blockin'. And after all, who needs to die over this petty squabble when a few pulverized bones will wrap it up? A lesson is learned by all, no one is dead, and we all live happily ever after.
However, there is the issue with missing walls and doors now. Huh.

When Gogo saw Andy as herself, the sight reminded me of the early Gogo pictures, back before she was a behemoth, before the Chicken Dance incident...

Redirection of lightning reminds me more of General Iroh than of Gandalf. Didi looks a lot better after doing it than Iroh did in "The Storm".
The last panel, however, reminds me of Sam in Ronin after Vincent's old comrade removed the bullet from him: "If you don't mind, I'm gonna pass out."

Somehow i knew that this would all end with Gogo having a wedgie.
Is this the final page? I'm curious to see if Andy would brave the cave of Gogo and try to make up. I picture something similar to Bilbo entering Smaug's liar.

Didi has taken Iroh levels of badass. This was...ho man.
Loved the build-up to this; also, here's hoping that Andy takes this as a VERY SERIOUS LESSON on how not to troll a dragon o.O.
Also, love the subtle, but deeper look at Gogo's character

1) AAAAAYESSSS Love your work as usual, 100% love.
2) I have two niggling problems with how you drew Gogo's right foot. I'm about to be a pedantic asshole about this. Allow me to preface my pedantry by saying that this has in no way reduced my enjoyment of the work.
2a) As a guy who has had this *particular* problem, Gogo leaving her heel up on her right/back foot while throwing a left would /completely/ rob her of power. The power drives up from the ground through the heel. Lifting the heel turns a devastating straight into a laughable not-even-a-jab. It's the difference between slamming a heavy bag back half a foot on impact and the fist bouncing off with barely a dent in the leather.
2b) AAAAA OW Gogo's ankle in the last panel you can see her right foot in, especially given where her knee is pointing. That is not a healthy direction for her foot to be pointed. Ow. Heel down, toe pointed at least 30 degrees farther in.
Okay, I'm done being a pedant about martial arts bullshit now. I wish to reiterate how much I love this work and how awesome it is and moar plz, my complaints are merely comments on realism in positioning and have little value given the context of Didi using her firebending to redirect lightning augh so awesome moar plz.

You're the first to point out what's kinda bugged me since I posted this
The first instance (the 2nd panel with Didi) has Gogo kinda staggered. I meant for this moment to be a second or two after the punch, as she's hit the brakes by throwing her left leg forward. But it does read a little awkward.
The second, as she's drawing back from the other two, is indeed too much of a twist. Would have been better to just have her foot pointed forward as she steps back.
Not huge problems, but if one cares to look its a little shaky. I'll have to be a little cleaner next time. Now that I've let the "Gogo Smash!" genie out of the bottle I wanna do more, hehe

Tozetre In reply to VanHeist [2013-02-25 03:18:52 +0000 UTC]
Ooooh, okay, so it's her weight being thrown forward and stopped, not her not being rooted. That makes /perfect/ sense and I withdraw my first complaint entirely.
I noticed that only because I am a tremendous martial arts fag and get bitchy with, like, /fantasy/ artists over the insensibility of their armour for snake people. /Snake people./ So I'm a ridiculous pedant and you should not feel bad about anything I pointed out. I really love your work and only mentioned it because I am a dick.
Youtube has a surprising number of martial arts videos of all different styles, btw, if you ever need a reference for a FITAN pose.

It's been said before, but Uncle Iroh got NOTHING on Didi!!!
I didn't really think Gogo would go through with it, I thought she'd punched through the wall based on the last panel of the previous strip. I liked the Croc Hunter comparison another member posted recently...with Andy demonstrating what would have happened if ol Steve was REALLY as irresponsible as some accused him of being.
Or for a Fallout comparison - DON'T POKE THE BEAR!!!!!

I figured he wouldn't, since Didi is a responsible person. Even if I agree that Andy needs to be smacked for acting like that, Gogo doesn't let too many people in beneath her shell, but I figure that's because at her core she's quite squishy.

So Andy, how does it feel to drive your "friend" to attempted murder? Yea that's right, you would be in a very bad way right now if not for the angelic busybody, Didi.
How did it come to this? Where did you go wrong? Where did all your tact and wit go? What were you trying to prove? And, most importantly, what exactly did you THINK was going to happen?! No strike that, next one is most important. Were you oblivious that you were hurting her feelings or did you just not care?
The freaking crocodile hunter plays it safer than you! Matter of fact, you could learn a thing or two from Steve Irwin. To his credit, the man spent years tangling with some of the deadliest beasties on the planet without getting killed or maimed (only to be done in by one of the ocean's most docile creatures . . . keep an eye on Didi.) Remedial homework for Andy: Watch Steve's shows. You might get some respect for being aware of when you are pushing someone/something to the point of lashing out with deadly force.
Believe it or not, I wrote a whole hell of a lot more but then the page refreshed and I popped a few blood vessels. Lesson learned. Speaking of which . . .

Speaking of man vs nature, this relationship seems like a Werner Herzog-esque struggle of man to assert himself against forces that can destroy him
Just remember, Andy: the Grizzly Man got eaten by bears in the end.

And speaking of cautionary tales, Gogo should pick up a copy of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. If she thought The Hobbit had a sad ending, well, wait till she sees what fate holds in store for those who can't control their own strength.
I'm not knocking Gogo though; she seems to be pretty aware of the gravity of her actions here. Which is more than I can say for Andy. Him I will knock. It's the only way he'll learn.

I've been a fan of yours a few years now and I commented on a previous comic saying how excited I was to see where this story went, but here with this strip I have to say I'm a little disappointed.
One of the marvelous things about Gogo is how she represents a small female demographic, and her size and demeanor are facets of her all around character rather than the sum total of who she is within the story. Comparing her to the overwhelming idea of the media's "female ideal" in our culture could have been an excellent chance to make people think about the way we treat women -- and maybe that's what you're still aiming at.
So far all I've gotten from this comic is Andy thinking he can shame Gogo's body to try and make her feel bad about her ego. I really hope he gets the sort of eye-opening response from his lady friends that he deserves in future installments, and I hope more than anything that Gogo gets back to being her fine, hulking, arrogant self; because no one ever -- and in this case, especially women -- should be made to feel bad about their bodies for any reason.

VanHeist In reply to Sentimentale [2013-02-21 02:37:52 +0000 UTC]
I think I get what you mean. This particular story arc only touches a little on "Gogo vs. the media female ideal" and is ultimately more about dynamics between two people--knowing when you've crossed a line, knowing when to stop, and how to make peace, etc. This is more of a "friendship" arc on its face.
But i think having dipped a toe or two into those waters (about Gogo and roles/treatment of women in general), there is plenty to encourage exploring it further in the future. And I think part of that IS addressed in this story: what Andy sees as a harmless jab at Gogo's seemingly resilient ego snowballs into a lot of self-doubt and recrimination. He thinks what he's done is trivial, but it eats away at Gogo to the point where she thinks a (cosmetic) change is a sort of assertive victory. And when he smugly laughs it off, it only makes things a hundred times worse.
"So far all I've gotten from this comic is Andy thinking he can shame Gogo's body to try and make her feel bad about her ego." I imagine many will read it that way, and perhaps it is. But I think that's quite an issue in itself. Gogo's got plenty of actual faults, but here Andy exhibits some of the ignorant faults all too common to us boys.

All right, very true.
I didn't mean that comment to sound like a jab at the story itself (I have issues with expressing myself over text :/) and now that I've thought about it more I guess I was just expressing my own disappointment at expecting one thing and getting another, which is not at all fair to you.
Thanks for replying; it was very thoughtful. In the future, I'll try not to dick around about stuff if I decide to comment.
