Description
As I have seen this issue a lot in here, here is a small tutorial about it.The reason the X value must be changed to 0 even if the value is displayed as 0.00 is because it is in fact "0.00xxxxx..."(x can be any number), and meta displays only the first three numbers. By changing the value to 0, it resets to "0.0000...."(all zeros), thus alligning them exactly in the 3D space's X axis.
Hope it helps.

I'm surprised not a lot of people knew is method.
i used this method since day 1 with metasequoia XD In fact i thought everyone was doing this method too....
but out at least now others may know a more efficient and easier way to do this

This is a much easier way to do it, I used to move them all over until they joined almost nicely in the middle. This makes all the sence

oh wow.Ā
previously Id select the verts in the middle, clone the head, and keep scaling them. BUT THIS IS A MUCH BETTER WAY TO DO THIS.
THANK YOU.

You're welcome.
Before discovering this way, I would freeze the mirror modifier and join the verticles one by one. Then I would delete the frozen part and re-apply the modifier.
An alternate to this way would be to apply the mirror joined modifier instead of the mirror separated one, however, if the head object includes the eyes and ears, it will connect them together as well and will look very ugly.
