Description
The Whirbird, clockwork hummingbird with gears, brass and nickel keyfeathers, a glass heart, and a touch of the Elsewhere.Original is really large, I think 18x24 inches, and is all colored pencil. The background was smashed in using Prismacolor Art Stix, which are pastel shaped chunks of woodless colored pencil lead.

Aw man rockin' taco a DD!!! Thank you, thank you! This is one of, or maybe my most! favorite pieces I've ever created, so it makes me happy that it gets the exposure.

I think that it is amazing and you absolutely deserve a DD. Congrats.
Beyond that though, I think that you did a great job blending the natural and mechanical. From far away the hummingbird looks like a normal hummingbird, but when you really look at it you see the gears and it's beautiful. Also, the amount of detail is amazing. I used to work with colored pencils and to get that kind of detail takes forever. Even the background that you supposedly "smashed in" has movement and life to it. Your hummingbird looks like it's going to jump of the page.
I'm going to stop talking now, but your work is absolutely stunning.

I don't remember! Quite a long time. I think the background alone, because of the size, took two days. And there wasn't a lot of thinking involved there.

for a long time i have been planning a ruby-throated hummer tattoo in memory of my aunt... this painting has inspired me - i may have it steam-punkified if you won't be offended. my aunt was a quirky, gothic person. i think she'd have appreciated something like this.

This is beautiful... Do you know the fairytale of H.C. Andersen, 'The nightingale'? In the tale, the emperor tries to replace the nightingale with a mechanic one. Just what came to my mind, when I saw this
