Description Ok, this is my first time making a tutorial, so I know it's not very good...and I bet there are a lot of grammar mistakes in there as well...x_x
Anyways, this is mainly for who is such an awesome friend for lending me Photoshop CS2!^^ It's my way of repaying him since he asked me about coloring. I hope it helps John! and I hope other people find this tutorial useful as well! I tried my best

If there are any questions, please feel free to post a comment, and I'll answer them to the best of my ability! Thank you!

Thanks much! It was very helpful to me. I was at a loss for how to do colors without just plain block colors, you gave me some great insights on how to use Photoshop to do some interesting stuff. If you'd like to see my (horrible) piece i just posted it. Thanks again! Hopefully with what I've learned here I'll get (MUCH) better!

how do you make the paint stay inside the outer lines but also fill the inner ones?! I followed your tutorial step-by-step and it didn't work for me. Also, I know it isn't stricly linked, but do you know how to convert a normal layer into a background?
Thanks!
Izzy

I have a question, if the sketch I use is a little dirty how can I put it as a clean lineart? and about the background layer, black top, and lineart... Im confused @.@

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vari In reply to gabiealvadiaz [2008-06-20 05:17:13 +0000 UTC]

If you are using Photoshop, try adjusting the levels of your image until you get something you're satisfied with. You know like increase the contrast, brighten, etc. If that still doesn't work, there are actually tutorials out there that shows you how to get a clean lineart, so perhaps you might want to check those out

The background layer and lineart are separate layers. I'm not too sure which part you're confused with though, so I don't know how to help sorry o_O;

Man, can you make it any bigger? LOL. My four eyes still cant see the screenshots? and where can I find the exact same image you are using? ya know just want to begins with something easy!

Hope to hear from ye soon?

vari In reply to artcreep87 [2008-06-20 05:12:47 +0000 UTC]

Sorry the screenshots are so small, but I made this tutorial a long time ago and I don't even have the original file anymore. So trying to resize it would just make it blurry...

The original image I used was just some little sketch I drew specifically for this tutorial. You can easily draw your own character and apply the techniques though

I was wondering... how can you use smudge tool without affecting the line art.
i got the part about locking thetransparent pixels. but still i manage to mess up my line work when I try to smudge the colours in my colourlayers.

help?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vari In reply to AnetteAga [2008-06-01 04:18:52 +0000 UTC]

Is your line art on a separate layer as your colors? Because if it is, it shouldn't be effected when you use the smudge tool. If they're in separate layers but it still happens, then I'm not too sure what the problem is, sorry

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AnetteAga In reply to vari [2008-06-01 11:52:52 +0000 UTC]

they are on seperate layers. but i still mange to smudge it all.
hm...
ok. well thank you anyway.

O_o;; I hope this tutorial helps me. XD At this point I seriously suck at coloring on photoshop and every other tutorial I go to seems to be too confusing for me. oo; Yours seems so much easier to understand and I appreciate the mentions of how you're brushes are (Example; 100% flow) and the use of the Smudge tool. Most people don't include that. I hope I can color a little better from this. ^^ Thanks!

Hi! I think i've said this before, awesome tutorial, i'll try it as soon as i get photoshop back at my computer
I was wondering, if i could use a pose very similar to the girls pose in this tutorial in one of my drawings? I found a sketch i did way back in may.. I didnt know where i had seen the pose before until today, thats why i didnt want to upload it..

vari In reply to lille-toni [2007-09-23 20:37:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your comment
I don't really mind if you use a pose that's similar to this one, seeing how this pose is a very simple one. ^_^

Thanks!
Er...that depends on what you're trying to do with the picture itself. If you manage to find some way to incorporate my tutorial into whatever-you-plan-on-doing with a normal picture, then go ahead! I don't see why not, heh
