Description
alternative visual identity for Soviet Union [Union of Soviet Sovereign Republic or Union of Soviet Socialist Republic - все ровно] and its national components [union republics as well as autonomous republics, provinces and districts].DOWNLOAD FOR FULL VIEW PLEASE
click here to see the detail with emblems for autonomous parts of several republics.
the common idea is to have a solid red flag with a vertical yellow stripe next to the hoist, which stands for the Union.
on this vertical yellow stripe a symbol for the Union is to be placed - i've chosen the red star, but other solutions [hammer and sickle, both symbols combined or nothing at all] are also possible.
flags for the subjects of the Soviet Union [right part of the image] are all based on the Union flag.
flags for the Union Republics:
"А" - adding the name of the republic in yellow, horizontally, in the official languages of the republic.
"Б" and "В" - adding a vertical stripe similar to the stripe on the actual flags of Soviet Republics and a symbol taken from the actual flag of the independent state or from some historical flags of the country.
flags for the 3 Caucasian republics [Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan] have the common yellow-black-red colour scheme taken from the flag of the Transcaucasian Dem. Fed. Rep.
the "В" versions are usually vexillographically better [rule of tincture etc].
"Г" - monochromatic [yellow-red] versions, with the characteristic symbols of the republics, taken from the flags of the independent countries or from some historical flags [or from the Soviet Republic flag - different types of waves on the flags for Latvia and Estonia]
flags for other national subjects
flags for other national subjects are composed:
1) of the flag for a respective Union Republic and of a national symbol of the subject [as shown in the 2nd and 3rd row of big flags.]
2nd row - "egalitarian proposal" - all symbols [of the Union, of the Union Republic, of the autonomous entity] are on the same level
3rd row - "hierarchical proposal" - the symbols are placed hierarchically.
2) of the flag for the Union and of the monochromatic [yellow-red] version of the national symbol of the subject, without [!] the symbol of the respective Union Republic.
"national" symbols of the autonomous republics, provinces and districts:
these symbols are in most cases taken from the actual flags that these entities adopted after the collapse of the Soviet Union and that are used today [sometimes i've only simplified the design].
exceptions:
#03 [Chechen-Ingush ASSR] - mix of the symbols of Chechnya and Ingushetia
#13 [Tatar ASSR] - part of the symbol of Idel-Ural Tatar state
#16 [Yakut ASSR] - aurora borealis from an early Soviet flag of this republic
#30 [Ust-Orda Buryat]- a Buryat symbol and a wreath from the coa of Irkutsk
#32 [Crimean ASSR] - Crimean Tatar tamga, but in red - a Russian symbol
#34 [Gorno Badakhshan] - "Г" and "Б" letters combined

sure.
which version would you like?
1. with a red star only
2. with hammer and sickle only
3. with both a red star and h&s
also, if you'd like to use it somewhere, please let me know where would you use it and provide information about the origin of this design by giving the link to this very page, or just to "varpho.deviantart.com".

i am not going to use it anywhere just noticed a serious lack of hi quality flags on deviantart
about the flag i think both should be used(star and h&s)since they represent the union
can you make it in 20,000(lenght) x 10,000(height)px res, without loosing the quality of the emblem pleasee
to be honest i cant decide between 1. and 3. option, so you can do it instead
inform me when you post it

you mean Г2 - Ukrainian SSR?
this one was easy, because the trident is a widely recognized Ukrainian symbol.
thanks.

it must have been nice on any level to be a smaller autonomous republic and be part of an empire that dominated half the world. the stability of the USSR when it worked must have helped millions.
anyway do you feel that the Russians and other republics gain anything by independance as opposed to membership in a greater union?

good sense of order, representing each state while keeping unity and looks good
sep Question?
what do you think bout the 50 states with 50 differ flags, each states unique but unified under the Stars and stripes. it gives the states more identity!

i like the fact that in USA every state has a unique flag [although i don't like many of their designs], but my idea with this set of new Soviet flags was that any flag could represent both the respective republic and the union, so that it could fly alone.
another reason i didn't create totally different flags for each republic is that - in reality - these [independent] republics have already adopted their flags and since i like these flags, i didn't have any reason to improve them.

good reason, i agree that each republic should have it's own design as well as the greater union, american problem was unity as well, most state flags talk more about unity than anything else!

Wow! Magnificent work! There's such perfect order to it all, so systematized so as to show the national identity within the greater uniform identity of the greater motherland. I love it!
