Description I was testing my new camera when I had the idea of taking photos of a few steps of my current drawing ^^. And here it is!
This isn't a real tutorial because I'm not a professional artist, it's just to show how I proceed. So if you have any ideas about how I could progress, it would be very helpful .
And please excuse my English too, it isn't my native language (that's the first time I type such a long text in English o_o).

Acrylics hate my guts so much. I suppose I should learn to use them properly instead of avoiding them but...Apparently I used to be able to make them work for me (read: grade/middle school), but after oil paints and other such mediums I just can't seem to work with the plastic-y texture of them...

I understand. I myself rarely use acrylics. I really prefer oil painting because I have time to manipulate it before it dries.

Mm but oils are so expensive. I had the toolbox from a couple years ago that I used for painting class -- had all my oil paints and supplies. No ventilation. Chemicals *melted* everything in the box. All trashed.

That's true, it's expensive and very fragile. That's why I mainly use "study" oil painting (how to say that in English ). It's not top quality, but that's enough for me.

Student oils? Yes, at least that's the one good thing, that's what mine were. Mmph, but even those, so much money to throw away! I know better now at least I suppose...

This is wonderful, I just got a set of watercolors at Michael's today, and I really want to know what I'm doing before I try anything. This was really informative, thank you very much. Wonderful painting as well. Oh, and it does count as a tutorial, even if you don't consider yourself as professional.

And you're very welcome.

Thank you for this tutorial, I found it very useful!

However, do you mind explaining the part of Step 4: "Wash the brush just after laying down the darkest colour and use it to blend with the layer underneath"? I'm a tad bit confused with it. So this new brush I'm using does not contain any water nor paint on it, I'm just using it to spread the darker colour, is that correct?

Sorry for the long comment. Once again, thank you for your help.

Vassantha In reply to Eschewal [2009-07-17 06:39:20 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for your interest in this little tutorial, I'm so happy that it's useful (and you actually read it !!!).
I'm sorry if the explanation is not very clear. English is not my first language so it might be a little confusing. Concerning step 4, you're right: the brush is just a little wet, no colour. This way, you'll be able to blend the shadow to the rest of the skin. Of course, the darkest colour must still be wet so that you can blend it.
I hope my explanation will help you. Don't hesitate to try it on drafts until you're satisfied. Ask me if you've got any other questions

Eschewal In reply to Vassantha [2009-07-17 10:38:29 +0000 UTC]

Of course I'd read it, it is very informative! (What's the point of a tutorial if you just glance through...? >3>'' )

Ah, alright, I get it now, thank you very much.

Don't worry, your written English is great, it's just my lack of understanding.

Vassantha In reply to Eschewal [2009-07-18 11:09:45 +0000 UTC]

lol, I said that because I think a lot of people just watch the images
And in fact you understood right, I just confirmed your thoughts.

Oh, I see. But they are beautiful images, so I don't blame them. They'll be missing out if they don't read the words as well, because they are very helpful.

Hehe, that's a nice way of putting it!
