Description
This is my first watercolor tutorial. Hope you like it.I feel like I've missed a lot of steps, but the problem is that while I'm painting I usually drift away in dreams... But that's me.
The final piece can be found here:

This is so helpful! >3<Â
I wanted to try out watercolor for the first time with probably not really expensive or fancy materials (the usual crayola set probably like this cdn.dickblick.com/items/003/09⌠and the usual brushes). What should I look out for when Im coloring and would sketch paper be fine for watercolor? I'm not sure if the water will seep through the paper... Is there any other materials besides the ones listed above that I should think about using?Â
and also, is it ok to use a little of color pencil to add some details? Thanks so much! :3

Hello there
I know a lot of people that use watercolors with set like that one, so there is no problem at all. If you've used more professional grade sets you'd notice a big difference, but if you are starting this set is good enough! You should look out for the mixing of the colors. This kind of sets, since the pigment is not very good, when you want to mix some colors they can come out a little opace and the color fades away rather quiclkly, so that i one thing you should be on the look out. About the paper, I would recommend using watercolor paper. You don't need to go to the more expensive one, you can always use more cheaper, but use at least 190g/m, because the water can really ruin the paper and your drawing! So be very careful.Â
Color pencils are a must have for anyone. If you don't want a pure watercolor painting, pick some color pencil, and add details to the painting. That way it is easier, and also lets you make a more interesting and full painting. Don't forget to always have a piece of paper near you so you can test the colors, the water, and if the watercolors and color pencils go together
I hope this information is of some use Good luck! Let me see the results after!
PS: One important thing, be very very patient, watercolors are not easy at all... Just try to have fun and practice a lot

If you must use sketch paper (instead of buying a cheap watercolor sheet...) You must be very careful not to use a large quantity of water. You can tape the sketch paper to a surface to that it doesn't wrinkle much

i feel compelled to say, this tutorial is rather lacking... or rather, it's not for beginners. and beginners are often the people who look at tutorials. you don't explain what a wash is, for example, and beginners will be totally lost. you don't go through the steps at all, you just show pictures of the piece at different levels of completion. no one really can see through this how you painted it.
i think you should start by talking about how the paint reacts with the water, and how different amounts of paint on the brush will change what you put on the paper, and how different amounts of water in the brush will change how the paint goes down. and demonstrate these differences, that is what should be in a tutorial. and then explain and demonstrate a wash.
this tutorial is kind of like saying to a beginning chef, "first you filet the fish, then you season it, then you cook it, and you're done." there's no actual instruction. you're obviously very skilled, and i feel like if you made another tutorial with the actual "how to" in it, it would be far more helpful than this is.
i apologize if i offend you at all, it's not my intention. i just had someone ask me what a wash was and said they were looking at your tutorial, and it wasn't helping them at all, and now they are discouraged from ever doing watercolor because it's "too hard" according to this tutorial, which gives no instruction. again, sorry if i offend you, i don't mean to. it's just...not a good tutorial.

I'd like to learn how to use watercolours because they're like Copics but cheaper, but.....8[ Way too hard. Not enough patience to practice...
It's a nice tutorial, though... It'd be easier to understand if I knew what a wash was.
I'll just...stick to black and white art.
