Thank you! I'm glad it could help. Hot pressed wc paper has a smoother surface and cold pressed is rougher. At the time that I did this tutorial, I didn't stretch my paper, but for the last couple of years, I've started and I really do recommend it as the paper is least likely to buckle while painting, which can produce some unwanted results while some washes dry. I have some newer tutorials too that can be found on my website. One shows how I stretch watercolor paper. You can find those here, if you're interested: www.elvenstarart.com/tutorials…

So when you first apply the mid-tone layer, you just... well add it it to the sections where the midtones would show? Not over the WHOLE thing right? O.O

ElvenstarArt In reply to Fumichun [2011-06-03 05:26:40 +0000 UTC]
You add it where the mid-tones and shadows are. So pretty much put it everywhere, except for where the highlights are. That part you leave white, or lighter than the mid-tone depending on your color scheme.

oh I get stuck on step 4 ... because ( i think) I didn't use the right paper but I have to finish it anyway ...any advise to make colors smooth in a paper with almost no cotton !?!?!

I'm afraid I never got very smooth results on anything but cotton watercolor paper.

Wonderful!!! I've been looking for a tutorial that will explain how to BLEND watcolors. Most tutorial assume you know this, I guess? Mine always come out streaky or I rub the color out. This is awesome. I'm very excited to try out your advice.

Thank you! Yeah, I always wondered why blending is always skipped over in watercolor tutorials.

It's the MOST important part? I mean, who doesn't know "base color, then shade, then highlight"? That's just drawing, that's not a watercolor tutotrial.

Oh oh oh~ miss~ Do you use cakes or tubes, and if tubes what brand would you suggest? The tubes I have are actually... rotting so my paints are drying out before I can use them.

ElvenstarArt In reply to EruhReign [2009-01-10 03:58:44 +0000 UTC]
I use tubes. I have a bunch of different brands -- Grumbacher, DaVinci, Daniel Smith. Those are all good brands. Daniel Smith are my favorites because they come in so many neat colors, but they're a bit pricey so I only buy them every now and then.
If you cut the tubes of your dried paint open you should be able to wet the dried paint and use it kind of like the cakes.

Hi thanks for taking the time to make such a detailed tutorial. Its extremely helpful. Janna (kuoma) very kindly gave me this link when I had asked for some tips in painting with watercolours. It's my favorite medium but I just wasnt able to get a realistic feel to my drawings, now hopefully I can try . I do have a few doubts if you dont mind, it will really help me out
. I was not able to do the yellow and crimson highlights that you mentioned. I have a basic 12 colour set so to get a very light pink glow i needed to dilute the colour a lot which in turn resulted in water patches
. Any tips???

ElvenstarArt In reply to juhi1217 [2008-06-30 22:12:13 +0000 UTC]
I'm very glad it could help! The yellow and crimson are applied very lightly, so yes the wash is mostly water and a little pigment. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by water patches, but maybe make sure that each layer of paint is completely dry first before applying the next. That way they won't flood into each other and will blend smoothly. I hope that helps!
