Description
Yep, I made a tutorial..I hope it's helpful, I tried to add in some extra detail that other tutorials I've seen have left out.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. But bear in mind that I am by no means an expert.

A very lovely tutorial!
I am a huge fan of watercolors, and while I apply different technique than yours, it is always very lovely to see different techniques and ideas! I guess the biggest difference is that I don't mind the cel-shaded look which the drawings get if one doesn't "smoothen" the edges, but this is a matter of personal preference.
Oh, and I often use kitchen salt to create textures.

Thank you! I'm glad you like it.
I use salt loads, but I find it never has such a big effect. I'm probably doing it wrong.

Well, what I often do with salt is achieving some nice mixed-color textures. What I do is the following:
- make the paper wet
- add my first color (with loads of water)
- sprinkle salt on it (have to do this quickly, so that the paper wouldn't form waves), this makes the color "gather" around the salt crystals
- add the second color in little dabs or drops, and this second solor now mixes with the other color gently, while flowing "around" the salt crystals.
I know, sounds strange.
As a very simple example, I used it in the background here: [link]
And I also use pepper sometimes! But only for dark backgrounds. Here is an example of what happens when you use salt, pepper and darker colors together: [link]
What is also awesome is mixing watercolors with inks! Then you get totally different intensity in colors: [link] (The dress was also done using the salt effect, but this time used on inks.)
And I also often use watercolors for underpainting, and then I finish the piece with colored pencils. Also gives an interesting look.
Watercolors are fun.
lol And sorry for such a long comment, I start to rant when I talk about watercolors. :3

Thank so much! I recently took up water colors but my technique sucks lol. My sister sent me a book for christmas and it was helpful but its mostly for like scenes and pieces that dont work with lineart (no people described either) Are you self-taught, school-taught? Do you have any recommendations for resources for someone just starting out? (or should I just stick with DA Tutorials as these seem to be the most helpful lol)
This makes me want to practice

Well I'm glad this helps! Well technically I'm school taught, but the methods I use are the complete opposite to what my teacher told me I should. XD
What I've learned to get where I am now is just through exploration, which (in my opinion) is the best way of learning as you will eventually find what's right for you.

Very nice ^^ haha, I really need to try that 'deepening the shading without making weird lines' thing..but I don't really know how to how do you blend it without making lines?

TwinklePowderySnow In reply to Spottedfire94 [2011-05-11 16:07:12 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I know, it's so hard to get right. Guah, it's so hard to explain. I try to blend it out with water whilst the darker colour is still wet... but it took me ages to perfect that technique. Just keep trying at it and eventually it'll pay off.
