I wouldn't say that's the reason at all. Considering lesbian tomboys DO exist; it's where stereotypes come from, after all.
From my experience with some... Unsavoury bronies, some of them just don't like the idea of lesbians in the first place.
I agree that people tend to slap lesbian on a tomboy from time to time, but there's really nothing wrong with that and it's nothing to get upset about. I mean, people portray Rarity as a lesbian all the time and she's the least tomboyish of them all. All of them get portrayed as lesbians by different artists. Heh.

Oh, so THAT's where the stereotype comes from, eh? Guess the Jews are secretly running the world with their big noses, the Germans are invading Poland, France is filled with cowards, Americans are fat as fuck cause they are Americans, Mexicans do nothing but jump the border and take everyones jobs, Gays are all flaming nancy boys, all black people love fried chicken and watermelons, and Russians/Irish are always drunk. Cause hey, surely those stereotypes had to come from SOMEWHERE, right? You know how fuckin' offensive and stupid this comes across, so yes it is something to get offended and angry at, because you are just endorsing a stereotype....That someone in a particular group (in this case, Lesbians) can fit a particular character trait (in this case, Tomboys) does not make it okay to assume that everyone in that group acts that way, or that its some kind of norm for that group.Not all tomboys are lesbians, and not all lesbians are tomboys.
Not like we can't have Rarity be a lesbian, or Fluttershy or anyone else...Naah! They rarely get shown as lesbians, but usually are shown as straight and have boyfriends, while RainbowDash gets shown as a lesbian 99.9% times, because she's a fuckin' tomboy and that's what people primarily use as their excuse.
Seriously though, its not even necessarily the issue of "this is a lesbian character who's a tomboy" if you wanna do that...fine, whatever, though you're using a stereotype and should be aware of it. My issue has always been that, is the JUSTIFICATION for making Rainbow a lesbian has always been "she's a tomboy." Not "I think it would be interesting if this character was homosexual". No, its pretty much treated as though its some strange obligation that Rainbow Dash has to be a lesbian because she's a tomboy. That's why its offensive. There's the hidden assumption that all lesbians are tomboys, and any girl who's a tomboy is a lesbian. Because that's the sole justification for making her one.
Are we clear now, why I'm so angry at this? I ain't gonna force the author to change stuff, but I think I'm allowed to speak my mind and so far I've been doing it rather civil since at no point did I even insult the author.

When you say 'they,' who are you talking about, the writers, but the definitive toward any of the Mane 6's sexualities are with Twilight and Rarity, and even then it's possible they could be bi or pan, not hetero.

And yes, that's true! I suppose that's what I meant; I like to keep my headcanon sexualities for characters as open as possible. Limiting possibilities by gender is no fun. B)
