thanks! we put a lot of time and effort into the actual detail of the work before covering it with texture, so i wanted to be able to share the ealier versions so some of that process could be seen!

What a lovely, charming piece! It reminds me of a picture from a book of fairy tales... but wait! Lurking just below the bright, happy surface are the dark undertones of decay and possible abandonment. The parts of the pumpkin where the veneer has broken away revealing worn bricks, the mushroom growing out of the cracked roof, and the door's rather sad countenance suggest that happiness, while not entirely an illusion, can serve to mask realities that are sometimes less than pleasant. When I first saw this piece it made me want to be a kid again, but as I noticed the details I began to doubt... Aww, what the heck, I still want to be a kid again!

when you are a kid, those things don't matter! it's only the grownups who pay attention or even care about those cracks under the surface! so yeah, i'd love to be a kid again.......but even so, i've come to appreciate the cracks in the veneer and the quirky little things that life puts in now and again.....they give character ....
thank you as always for your wonderfully delightful comment!

You bring up a good point. Maybe when I see something like this I should try looking at it like a child rather than as an adult. We lose so much of our sense of fun and wonder when we grow up.

we certainly do.......the pressures of work and home and all that stuff tends to erase our inner child.....luckily when we get older and start having the early stages of dementia, our inner child tends to find us again......but it would be best if we were able to keep some of those childlike qualities through our whole lives...
