Description
This is a coloring tutorial for Photoshop CS3. I made this for a friend. It's my first tutorial, so I hope it makes senseRelated content

Just out of curiosity, considering you made this tutorial in 2010, do you still use this method (or at least a good portion of these methods) in present times?
Regardless of your answer, I have found a lot of things in this tutorial to be pretty helpful. Thank you for the wonderful tutorial! It's a nice blend between cell shading style (visually leans more towards this side) and somewhat of a linear digital painting style that would seem to possibly speed up my painting/coloring processes. Thank you again!

I still use this technique, though I have combined a lot of other methods such as traditional layering of strokes, brushes, and other properties. This can be said for color edits as well.
Thanks, I'm really glad this tutorial helped you out!

Thanks for your quick response!
Yeah, just from looking at your newer deviations, this method doesn't seem very prominent compared to previous works, hence, why I asked in case you possibly found an even more efficient way to do this. Still, I like both of the concepts (this tutorial as well as your newer methods) based on what I can see visually. I'm trying to lean and improve more on your current style of painting digitally, so even this little bit of information helps.
I almost want to see a more recent tutorial (not necessarily step-by-step) of your current process, but I acknowledge how tedious that would be considering it looks like you use a bunch of different methods to collaboratively make such outstanding pieces of works! Nonetheless, please keep up the good work!

You're welcome!
I use this method mostly for sharp contrast in shading and lighting; brushes are mostly used for softer/gradual shading. I mix these two methods a lot now. I use the pen tool plenty and the polygonal for certain sections.
My other coloring tutorial is a step by step but a bit more recent. An even more updated tutorial would be helpful though. I hope to do one in the near future. Thanks again!

I never thought about colouring this way.
You've really opened my eyes.

I'd very much like a pen tool tutorial; for instance, I only know how to make a straight line with it (-----) but not how to draw around so you can make a box out of that line (===. Does it make any sense? Anyway, a tutorial that explains the pen tool overall would be very appreciated :3

Ah sure thing, I'll put this on my list (don't worry, I'll get started on my tutorial list pretty soon XD). I think I'm pretty sure I know what you mean

Wow this helps a lot!!! THANK YOU! Under the Shading with a pen tool for the finish product, did you only change the brightness or did you change the contrast too?

haha XD, either way I think the noise is fine . It's really up to you how you want to use filters.

Great tutorial! I often use a very paint like approach (no burning and no pen tool) but this is actually very handy. I see how you used this technique in your Samus picture with the bit of noise added.

Thanks very much! Sometimes I use the paint approach as well, but for quick and little details. Thanks again

That's a neat technique for shading. I think I'm gonna try it with my next pic.

I'm gonna try it as soon as I'm done writing an article (I have a job writing about the 3DS), building a site for my mom, building my own site, and getting through all your awesome comment replies! (no, seriously, no one seems to reply to my comments the way you do; the world needs more people like that. )

Oh wow, that job sounds really cool . I hope the site building goes well.
Thanks and you're very welcome! I'm fine with explaining things out (as best as I can) and chatting .

This is so cool. I don't want to make mine as detailed, so I just use the dodge and burn tool. But I might use these.

Thanks a lot! Yep, it's up to you on how much detail you want to add. I tend to add a lot
