Description
Beeku came up with the idea to Dragonize her Digimon, and several others followed suit, so I knew I had to do it with my Emily and Crocutamon too! It was quite a blast to do. I had fun trying to emulate the How to Train Your Dragon style…especially translating it from 3D.
Yes, Crocutamon makes a Very Big Dragon. I figured since most of his evolutions are extremely huge his dragon form would be, too
Dragon Type: Cackling Crushjaw
Dragon Class: Stoker
View its hatchling stage!
Although the Cackling Crushjaw shares several aesthetic traits with the Night Fury, the Crushjaw is actually categorized in the Stoker class. While it cannot (like many Stoker class dragons) set itself on fire, it makes up for this with a higher shot limit than average, and produces concentrated fire bullets so intensely hot they sometimes appear in unusual colors. Additionally, the Crushjaw has one of the highest bite forces of any dragon, with enough jaw strength to crack metal, thus its name.
Due to its enormous size (larger than a Monstrous Nightmare, smaller than a Typhoomerang), the Crushjaw is not particularly fast or agile. It is also extremely awkward when walking on land, as its front legs are significantly longer than its back ones, meaning it walks with an odd lurching motion. It moves much more fluidly in the air but is, again, not particularly quick. This dragon is exceptionally strong, however, able to lift enormous weights and even other dragons with little trouble. It is also extremely enduring and has a lot of stamina, allowing it to fly, glide, fight, take hits, or work for hours without needing to rest. This endurance also extends to its stomach—the Crushjaw can eat almost anything and digest it with ease, and (alongside the Typhoomerang) it is one of the few dragons capable of consuming eels with no repercussions. Its favorite meal is bone and bone marrow—Crushjaws have been seen stealing from graves to obtain their favorite treat and burying bones for later, and even have a rivalry with the Boneknapper, as both dragons will steal each others' bone hoards.
The Crushjaw has a number of very unique and unusual traits. The most notorious is its 'laugh,' one of the many vocalizations these dragons make. Vikings will often refer to it as a 'Giggle Dragon' due to the noise, although it is important to note that just because it 'laughs' does not mean it is in good humor, and still should be approached cautiously. Their 'mane' is actually hundreds of sharp quills, which will puff up if the dragon feels threatened. Finally, unlike many dragons that have no preference, the Crushjaw typically prefers female trainers, due to the matriarchal pack hierarchy they follow in the wild—they may disobey or test male riders.
Rider: Emily
Emily originally trained as a healer's apprentice in the use of herbs and remedies to treat the villagers of Berk. Her training didn't change much after the dragons joined, until, while gathering more materials for her work, she inadvertently came across a young adult Crushjaw that started following her around. Although initially terrified of him (he was quite big and clearly unfamiliar with humans), he drove off a pack of wild boars to protect her, and she realized that she'd somehow gotten herself a dragon. After consulting with the Dragon Academy for tips on how to train her new friend, she fully embraced her place as a rider, and began learning more about dragon anatomy in order to be able to treat them too.
Emily is not a combatant and has very little fighting training. She makes up for this by acting as the Academy's on-call medic and rescue personnel; she keeps the packs on her dragon Kaftar's harness well stocked with medications in case villagers or dragons are hurt, and the Crushjaw is large enough to carry away most dragons on the island if they are too injured to fly. If they do get into a scuffle, Kaftar is extremely protective of Emily and will fight viciously to keep her safe. When not on call, Emily often studies dragons at the academy or delves further into her healer studies, and hunts for more ingredients (Kaftar has gotten particularly good at sniffing out the wild herbs she needs).
Okay and now I must bed. Aaaah so tired I worked all day on this

Thanks! And yeah, I love the huge dragons, and all Crocutamon's evolutions are huge, so he'd be a big dragon

Haha fair enough. Still, it's awesome to see such a grand scale to a dragon! Nice work! ^^

How did I know he was going to be HUGE X'D
This is BEYOND awesome. And of course he'd be a 'giggling dragon'. XD And that matriarchal hierarchy bit is a nice touch~
He looks really cool, I think you got the HTTYD style thing down, despite the 3D aspect.
Trust me, I know the feel when trying to 3D to 2D 'OTL.
All these wonderful posts makes me wanna just jump on the bandwagon too~

He's big in every other form, might as well be big here too
Thanks! I never really went into a lot of other classic hyena details (like the matriarchal society they have naturally or their pack mentality) since those things likely wouldn't apply to Digimon. It was kinda fun to go back to the basics and create a hyena-dragon that drew off both the original critter and the Digimon
Haha I remember that image...yeah it's surprisingly tricky to translate! But I'm glad we both nailed it in the end
You should TOTALLY jump on the bandwagon! Turn your dragon into a ohwait.
But no, srsly, Delgamon should totally join the team. She even has experience being a dragon already. We need her!

Oh man just look at the SIZE of him! Lapis would think twice before starting a fight- who are we kidding he might just does it to prove something. I love how Kaftar is so well suited for Emily's chosen profession. I get the distinct feeling Faith often ends up in Emily's clinic badly poisoned or something, and Crocutamon gets annoyed and hunts down Lapis to give him a lecture on being gentler to humans.

VelkynKarma In reply to Beeku [2014-08-03 22:22:29 +0000 UTC]
I'm sure Kaftar's size would automatically deter many dragons from attacking, but I'm equally sure Lapis would not be one of those dragons
Man, if that happened often enough I think Emily would look into concocting something that Faith could use to either prevent poisoning effects to begin with, or just so she'd have something on-hand to take in the event of breathing too much noxious gas. Because getting poisoned is never fun and getting poisoned a lot is just awful.
Meanwhile, yes, Crocutamon-dragon would be looking to teach Lapis a lesson on how to treat his rider...possibly by sitting on him until he's so out of breath there's no way he's spewing gas. He'd be heavy!

ZOINFDAD I love the remarkable size difference between them! And Cru's adorable face full'a'fangs ^u^
All of the text details are lovely, but I particularly love the hunch to his back as it keeps true to his Hyena origins.
His wings are impressive and his eyes are expressive, and I just love the colors overall~<3

Hahaha yeah he's a biiiiig boy (and all the HTTYD dragons seem to have loads and loads of teeth, and since Crocutamon is already pretty toothy I figured it'd fit).
I had to do a couple sketches before that hunch got emphasized well enough so I'm glad that stood out to you. I had to kinda backpedal a little and return to regular hyenas for designing a hyena-dragon since Crocutamon happens to be so stylized for the sake of being a Digimon. (Dragon-Crocutamon is also not as vibrantly orange )
I am glad you like him X3 He was super fun to make. Thanks to all you guys for inspiring me enough to work on it!

*makes a mental note to try and dragonize one or two of my own oc's* This is cool! I love the bio you gave them! I still wish I'd seen the 2nd movie in theaters, but I've been too busy! *sobs* Still, awesome dragon idea!!!

Yeah this was a pretty fun project, especially since a lot of the HTTYD Dragons have other animal traits besides lizard-y ones. Making a hyena-dragon was fun And the bio was super fun to write up too so I'm glad you enjoyed it
Daw, you didn't get to see it? Is it not in theaters anymore where you're at?

Dragons are just awesome no matter what! I've seriously got a mini-collection of art books that focus just on dragons (the Dracopedia series is my favorite ) I need to work on looking through them and getting a bit more diverse in my monster/creature designs... I tend to use the same body shape a little too often
No, I don't think it's still in theaters... I could be wrong though. I definitely want to buy the DVD when it comes out! The animation from previews and clips I've seen is just gorgeous!

Dragons are my favorite mythical animal so I feel much the same way as you I like studying actual lizards and reptiles too, to see how they're put together (they've got some very distinctive feet in particular that'd look cool big sized on a dragon).
It is a pretty gorgeous movie! I disliked a few of the story choices they made (I won't spoil anything, but some of the things that the characters do, or things that they get involved in, felt highly unnecessary). But overall it was a pretty good movie, definitely worth seeing. I think I still prefer the first movie, but I intend to buy the second when it's out too

Dragons are just wicked awesome. It's hard for me to not want to base all of my own original species off of them I've been trying though. Here's hoping for some originality! lol...
I think one of my favorite clips I've seen so far was of Hiccup's mother (I believe her name is Valka, right?) showing Hiccup how Toothless can raise his spikes for sharper turns. Toothless is as excited as a puppy about it and Hiccup's just like "Did you know about this?"

Totally, it's really hard to resist doing things with dragons Fortunately, it's such a broad topic you can do all sorts of things with them, both design-wise and story/lore-wise.
Yup, Valka, that's right. I remember that scene. Toothless is just very puppyish around her the whole time, it's adorable He can go from being quite mature and intelligent as a dragon to OMFG!!!!!!!1!!!1! I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT EVERYTHING!!!! It's hilarious.

I still love the idea from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire where they had the tiny dragons in the bag. When I saw that I was all "HELL YES GIMME A TINY DRAGON TO GUARD MY DESK AND HIDE IN MY POCKET!" I've actually got a little dragon figure that I jokingly pretend guards my art supplies while I'm gone
He's awesome. Got him at one of those Medieval Times places on a school trip. All dark blackish-purple with silvery-kinda-pinkish scales on his underside. Has some bones and stuff on the base he stands on. Very cool
lol
The part I kept laughing at during that little scene was Valka's dragon just dumping snow on Toothless while watching him go into puppy mode. Like "Yes yes you can make better turns because your scales do that thing. Now settle down you crazy dragon-puppy." Toothless actually reminds me of my cat Panther before his health started getting bad, green eyes and attitude to boot lol

Very cool! I used to collect dragon statues and pewter dragons when we did a lot of summer vacationing so I can relate I stopped recently when I didn't have a place to put them (and I haven't gone on vacation in a while) but it's a collection I'd like to start up again when I have my own place.
There are a lot of adorable scenes with Toothless. And Cloudjumper (that's Valka's skycutter dragon), but yeah, it's really Toothless that sells it

I'd love to start a collection of small dragon figurines like my little purplish-black guy (I jokingly named him Grimble after the trend of "g" names for dragons in a book series I read... I believe it was called The Last Dragon Chronicles... The first book is The Fire Within in case you're curious. Even though it's for a mostly younger audience the series is still a fantastic read; I have the entire set (I've yet to finish the last three or four books that came out later) on my shelf because I love them so much ) If I could get the skills and materials I'd even consider sculpting my own. I really love the D&D dragon designs and I've even got a field guide type book for them
Red dragons are so cool looking haha
Cloudjumper! Now I remember his name. He has an awesome design. It reminded me of a wyvern since he has no front legs and just the "scissor wings" as I call them. I loved his design from the moment I saw him in trailers!
