The fight against Skullsplashmon starts to amp up as Demidevimon successfully evolves. Unfortunately, the thrill of evolution leaves him just a little bit too power-hungry...

STORY SNIPPIT:

The resulting surge of power was like nothing Demidevimon had ever felt before, not as long as he’d been alive. He wasn’t sure where it came from, but it was like data just surged through him, into him, building him up, reconstructing him. His broken wing reformatted itself perfectly, and then grew larger, stretching out and out. His limbs grew longer, his body more defined, his energy reserves doubled, tripled, quadrupled.

He had evolved, some distant part of him told himself—he could see now that he wasn’t Demidevimon any longer—and the rush of power was intense. He felt like he could do anything, absolutely anything. There was so much raw energy at his disposal, so much he could do to shape it, to destroy, to master, to control. He was unstoppable compared to the weak, pitiful thing he had been just a few moments earlier. He could feel his strength boiling through his blood, his data, his mind, and knew that nothing, absolutely nothing, could stop him now—and he loved it.

If he’d only been this powerful a few years back, when he still served his masters...if he had been Champion then, his old bosses never would have considered him a mere minion. They would have been terrified of him, because he could destroy them easily if provoked, and they would not dare cross him. No, they would have respected him, because he was powerful, and power was respect.

He was powerful now. He deserved that respect, not the mockery he’d gotten up until a few minutes ago. The pitiful creatures that had dared to insult him for his so-called weakness had to pay, had to learn that inside that supposedly weak shell was the potential for what he was now. They all had to learn. And he would start with that damned Skullsplashmon, for making him feel so useless before when he was certainly anything but.

Eyes narrowed in determination, he focused his power, the raw, destructive energy he could feel coursing through him, and lunged forward towards the enemy digimon, hand outstretched.

Thomas clutched at his wounded shoulder and gaped in surprise as Demidevimon finally evolved, reconstructing into tall, gangly-looking demon with unnaturally long limbs and a broad wingspan punched full of holes. Devimon, his beeping digivice flashed on the screen, and Thomas couldn’t help but feel a little unsettled by that. He was shaky on the details, but hadn’t a Devimon ruled this island years ago with an iron fist, or something like that? Thomas could certainly believe it; Devimon practically radiated an aura of power and danger.

But it was still Demidevimon, wasn’t it? Just bigger? Already he had unleashed some sort of attack, grasping the Skullsplashmon and shocking it with what looked like black and red electricity. Skullsplashmon shrieked in surprise and pain, and Devimon easily forced it back still further, away from Thomas. Just like a partner digimon was supposed to do; just like he’d seen others do, back at the camp, when they achieved their Champion forms.

Except something about this didn’t feel right, Thomas thought with a frown, as he watched the battle, still gripping his sliced open shoulder. Devimon was certainly still forcing the Skullsplashmon back, alternately lashing out with clawlike hands or shocking the enemy digimon with more of the black-and-red electricity, but he seemed to be enjoying it too much. He laughed as he caused pain, showed off his skills and power, reveled every time he successfully landed a hit and damaged his enemy further. Skullsplashmon fought back gamely, snapping with powerful jaws and lashing out with claws, but whatever Devimon had done with his first attack had apparently weakened the spiny digimon considerably.

Devimon was more powerful; Skullsplashmon was rapidly becoming outmatched. Thomas should have felt exhilarated about that. He and Demidevimon together as a team were obviously extraordinarily powerful. But he didn’t like what he was seeing. Devimon wasn’t restraining himself at all—he lorded his power over his enemy, not unlike the digimon masters Demidevimon had frequently complained about from his past. This was past strength. This was just wrong.
