Things turn a little sour as Thomas and Demidevimon struggle to get a fang from Skullsplashmon.

STORY SNIPPIT:

Demidevimon’s jaw dropped in surprise as the Skullsplashmon glared evilly at him. Too late, he realized the giant digimon’s wide paw was swinging out of nowhere at him, and he took the hit head-on with a pained yelp. The enormous hooked claws missed tearing him open—barely—but there was a sickening snap-crack as one of Demidevimon’s bat-wings folded the wrong way. He cried out in pain and dropped like a stone into the snow several feet away, easily batted aside.

“Silly little Rookie,” Skullsplashmon crowed. “Did you really think such a weak trick would work on me? Hah!”

Demidevimon was stunned. Weak? He was weak? Was he really so useless that he couldn’t even hold his own for five seconds against a monster like this, even after all the training he’d done with Thomas? This was just like all those years of servitude all over again, constantly getting battered around by one evil digimon after another, too weak to stand up for himself, to do anything except obey. He really was useless...how had he ever thought he could bring down Skullsplashmon as he was? The realization hurt almost more than his injured wing, or the smack he had taken from the digimon.

He could hear Thomas frantically calling his name, and it stirred him to action again. He struggled weakly to climb to his feet, but his short, stubby legs floundered in the snow, and his wing hurt too much to use to push himself up or fly free. It only reinforced the notion that he was a completely useless, weak excuse for a digimon. He really should have spent the rest of his life being a servant, not a partner. What good was he as a partner, anyway?

“Too bad, little Rookie,” Skullsplashmon growled. “You lose the game. I’ll eat you whole...though you’ll barely be a mouthful!” And he lunged forward, digging his massive claws into the snow and dirt beneath to drive himself forward for still further speed.

Demidevimon panicked. Eaten? He was going to die being eaten? It just wasn’t fair! He’d been threatened with being dinner a few times for his bosses, amongst many other threats, and it had always been the least appealing of an endless variety of bad choices. He struggled frantically, flapping his wings and scrabbling his stubby claws, but this only succeeded in causing him more pain as he jarred his injured wing. And for all his efforts he was too late anyway; he could see Skullsplashmon’s enormous, gold-lined jaws now, opening wider, the last thing he would ever see—

“Demidevimon! No!”

Demidevimon squeezed his eyes shut at the last minute, really preferring to not watch his own death coming. He felt the sudden jarring impact as something dragged him up and out of the snow seconds later, earlier than he had expected—that digimon was faster than it looked!—and squeezed his eyes even tighter, grimacing against the shredding pain of dozens of sharp fangs—

Except he didn’t feel smooth, sharp edges or hot drool. Instead the thing that had grabbed him was warm, soft, and much smaller than Skullsplashmon’s jaws, strong and firm but not painful. Startled, Demidevimon opened his eyes and rolled his eyes up as best as he could. He was shocked to find Thomas holding him, gritting his teeth as he carried his digimon and bolted as fast as he could over the snow.

“Tommy!” Demidevimon yelped in relief. “I didn’t think you’d save me like that!”

“No friend of mine is being lunch,” Thomas panted back. “Not to a bully like th—argh!”

Thomas had managed to get to Demidevimon first, being more agile than Skullsplashmon—but that hadn’t stopped the larger digimon from charging, and once he built up momentum he didn’t stop. Skullsplashmon snapped his jaws with a loud crunch as he shot past Thomas, twisting his head as he tried to get at his original prey.

Thomas twisted his body and threw out an arm to defend, avoiding the brunt of the attack, but several of Skullsplashmon’s fangs dug deep into his shoulder all the same. Thomas yelled in pain as his shoulder was torn open, sending rivulets of blood splashing over the snow. But for all that his grip on Demidevimon only tightened, and he kept trying to run away from Skullsplashmon, though his confident gait had now been reduced to a stumble.

“Tommy!” Demidevimon cried out, frantic. “Tommy, are you okay?”

“F-fine,” Thomas stammered, gritting his teeth. He tried to make for a band of thickly grown trees, still carrying his digimon, hoping to lose the larger Skullsplashmon in them. But Skullsplashmon was already coming around again for a new attack after the last failed pass, gleaming jaws open wide as he plowed after the helpless human and digimon team.

Damn it, Demidevimon thought. This just wasn’t fair! He was supposed to be Thomas’ partner. He was supposed to protect him from digimon like this, to do the fighting humans couldn’t handle. That was why Thomas had a digivice, right? Why they’d trained so hard, both on their own and in this tournament? Why they’d agreed to look out for each other? And yet here they were, with Thomas, just a human, practically fighting Skullsplashmon by himself while lugging around his useless, broken-down digimon who wasn’t even strong enough to last five seconds on his own without his partner’s help.

“Damn it!” Demidevimon shrieked helplessly again, as Skullsplashmon drew nearer, growling laugh rumbling all around them. “I wish I was stronger than this! Then I could protect—Thomas, look out!”

Skullsplashmon lunged. In a moment of complete insanity—because that was all that could explain such a drastic, stupid action—Demidevimon struggled free from Thomas’ grip. Ignoring his human’s yell, hurled himself at the attacking digimon, broken wing and all.

like this one... pain and blood is the reasonable reaction for to receive a Digimon's attack. Well done. ^^

Yeah, digimon are more hardy and used to fighting each other, so I can understand a lack of blood or damage. But unless a human is really lucky they're probably gonna get hurt quite a bit if they go up against a digimon. Unless they are Masaru in foot-thick plot armor anyway.

Ain't it the truth. There's a sad lack of good shows these days, particularly for kids. They've all gotten weird and don't have any of these great values anymore.
