Description
HOLY SHIT THIS TOOK A LONG TIME.This is Kyle "Oancitizen" Kallgren as Sherlock and his girlfriend Maribeth as Irene Adler. It was commissioned by Maribeth, though I probably would have drawn something like this anyway... I just wouldn't probably have done such an extensive and detailed coloring job on it if it wasn't commissioned. Cuz. Seriously, guys, this was an undertaking of epic proportions. I don't think I've spent as much time doing hand coloring work as I did with this painting in many, many years. You can't even tell from the scan but most of this painting literally sparkles because I did almost all of the highlights in shimmer paint.
Overall, I think there's around 24 hours of work in this. The crimson reds -- JUST the crimson reds -- took 8 hours to paint.
This is because watercolor paints are bitches and it takes the patience and will of a drill sergeant combined with a saint combined with a Nazi to make the fuckers behave. I usually get around that by using watercolor pencils, but most of this painting involved the use of regular watercolors (the water-soluble pigment cakes) for at least some of the coloring.
Hmm... what other technicalities can I quote at you? I used 11 different brushes, 6 sets of watercolors/watercolor pencils, one mechanical pencil, and one uni-ball pen from the grocery store.
Because you can have all the expensive paints and brushes in the world and sometimes what works best is the same thing 2nd-graders use to do their homework.

It might have taken a long time, but it was most certainly worth it! Kyle and Maribeth look great. You have outdone yourself.

Man I don't even want to think how tricky that feather would've been to get the subtle shifts in colour. It's absolutely beautiful Venny.

Thanks, hon!
(The "trick" involves 5 different layers of paint. ^_^)

You've outdone yourself yet again, Ven.
See, this is kinda why I envy you a little. What I do usually only ends up as "cute".
But this? This, my friend, is BEAUTIFUL.
Feel proud, sir. Feel very, VERY proud.

Aww, thanks.
I still can't color digitally half as well as you can, though. ;3

I LOVE the reds and oranges. There's so much TEXTURE in this, even on DeviantArt. I can't imagine how it looks IRL!

Thanks!
The reds and oranges look a lot better IRL plus the background is done all in teal and olive/lime green which my shite scanner doesn't seem to want to pick up AT ALL... but it's really all about bright, complimentary colors.
