Description These are simply the major steps to how I make the comic. There's no really describing, as you can get how I actually color an things in the tutorial here : [link]

If you're interested!

You can now see how sloppy my pencils are before I start inking. They are so HORRIBLE! I don't bother with small details and if something isn't to scale I don't bother changing it to match - I simply write a note to myself to change it when I ink over it. Like "shrink" or "make larger" or "push down" like seen here. To be quite frank, the pencils are more of a thumb, and I combine pencilling and inking in one. I hate drawing over the same thing twice, so my pencils are always very loose (at least digitally).

Then I fill in the flat colors, shade, and add 'atmosphere'. It's pretty simple really! Today it took me a long time, but to be honest the longest step is always the 2nd.

Coloring used to be the longest, but now it is definitely the inking cos I am trying to be so picky about line weight and forcing myself to draw smaller and with more flow.

THAT WAS SO BORING, go about your normal lives now! Might scrap in a bit.

Oh and I absolutely love your art, and when i get some money (for i am so broke) i will buy hanna, and make things shaped like him...liek cookies...and a pie~

Cool, I actually never do it step by step, I should do that, I've never thought about doing it like this
When I draw like I do I usually regret one part later and then it's to late to fix..

What are the overlay layers that you use? Also... how do you do them?

When you do the inking, is that with pens, or do you do that on the computer? If you do it on the computer, then may I ask what tools you use?

mioaan [2010-04-17 02:55:17 +0000 UTC]

how do you manage to get the texture only in the panels, and not on the white? or do you just erase it around the art?

Hey, I was wondering, how do you make your panel outlines look so neat?

starfishey [2010-02-25 17:06:45 +0000 UTC]

I'm curious if you do some thumbs of the panel layout/angles before you do the sketch or if you just have a VISION and it works out in the end every time.

When you make a comic, do you being with sketching it out on paper or do you start on the computer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vert-is-ninja In reply to Sour-Apple-2012 [2010-01-16 14:28:23 +0000 UTC]

I sketch it out on paper and then I put it through digital treatment! The inks and colors are all digital!

Hope that helps. :>

Sure, I just know a few comic-ians who start directly on the computer without any paper whatsoever. I tried it myself but it blew up in my face. Thanks!

I really like the idea of not overthinking your penciling stage. that really makes a lot of sense.

May I ask, do you seperate layers or build it all up on one? I'm really interested in the text where it looks like you've added a gradient layer, or is that painted?

Cheers,
Crispen

vert-is-ninja In reply to exquisiteoath [2010-01-09 19:59:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Personally it's easier for me too because all the effort I put into the pencilling stage usually seems wasted in the end, as I tend to change things as I ink over them.

I build it up all on one until the very last stage where the 'atmosphere' and overlay layers are all on different layers with different overlay effects in Photoshop.

Hope that helps!

I love looking at things like this - seeing the steps of how someone works is fascinating. I honestly would not be able to do what you do with pencils and inking here - I need some solid guidelines to ink over, which is why I spend so long on the sketching.

That, and I sketch like I'm a spastic hamster - lines go EVERYWHERE.

Thanks for posting this!

vert-is-ninja In reply to SharpAce [2010-01-09 19:55:43 +0000 UTC]

I ink digitally! It's faster for me honestly. I tend to drag my hand through all my inks WITHOUT fail.

Pen tool or free hand?

Aw! I'm in the same boat too. Only I get too impatient and start erasing before the ink is dry. Ha.

Where would we be without Photoshop?

This /is/ rather interesting... Or at least I think so. I dunno, I just think the colours getting put in are way neat... and how there's the shades, and then the highlightie-things...DX man, I wish I had the patience to do it.

D: Heh, also, that Hanna waaay up at the tippy top in the right corner panel is way cute. Just a side note...

hey,
when one inks digitally one no longer needs to be so clean with their pencil work its just extra work that isn't needed. Unless you want to go traditional, but that is a much different creature.

I find this fascinating. I have a template, but I barely know how to use it. I took a Photoshop class and while I learned a great deal, I have soo much to learn. This is not only helpful for learning, but I also love seeing another artist's process. Great stuff.
