Description
######### UPDATE 12/6/2013 #########Hey guys. It's been a year and a half since I uploaded this tutorial and I've gotten a ton of interesting feedback. In the time that has elapsed, I have discovered advanced ways of drawing that increased my ability to draw faster. A lot of people have been asking for an explanation as to how I update so quickly, so I am going to add these new methods to this tutorial as they fall under the category of speeding up your drawing skill.
Enjoy!
Oh and I think I'll make it a tradition of listing the amount of work I've done whenever I update this tutorial with another time-saving tip/trick for you to use.
Currently my comics are at...
TSB - page 799
Hinata - page 200 (completed to page 213)
Lindbergh - page 199
TTX - page 108 (completed to page 143)
Glyphmaster - page 32
Kryth - page 2 (T-T)
So all in all, 1388 pages in 3.5 years, 397 pages per year, 1.08 pages per day.
#########
So I just reached page 699 of my longest comic, TSB, and I realized that my 2 year anniversary was last month - June 13th. That means that in 2 years, I've drawn 900+ pages.
Last week I did a tutorial on how to draw things going fast, but this week's tutorial is about all the tips and tricks that I picked up over these 2 years that allowed me to draw at such a rate while balancing my work in medical school.
Sorry it's so late! This one took me a while!

I draw most organic stuff. Modeling I save for geometric stuff, like you said. It's tougher to model organic stuff, and the filters I use work better on geometric stuff.

you should do a tutorial about using what ever 3d rendering program you have...

If enough people ask for it, I'll do one on Cinema 4D

This is some scaringly good information. I'm trying to get a comic done and working it out on my current load i'd be creating about 240 pages a year (on top of that, that's my 'generous' estimate and the pages won't even be coloured). Something like this gives me a little extra hope since i have a tight 'normal' work schedule.
Out of curiosity, how long does it take you to do a single page from start to finish? My current is three hours (90 mins sketching, 60 inking and 30 scanning, editing, lettering, publishing). I'm using traditional all the way up until the scanning part.

I should update this. I recently switched to a method of batch lineart, which allows me to do around 20-28 pages a week. With my old method, which consisted of doing everything one page at a time, depending on the number of panels, a single page could take me anywhere from 2-4 hours. But I realized that this method made me lazy whenever I finished a page. So now I finish the lineart for a chapter in blocks of 4 pages at a time before doing all the backgrounds at once and then all the editing, lettering, etc.
I also use a tablet, because it makes things way neater and way faster.

20-28? ... ouch. I think it's time i cut my losses and switch to pure digital. I prefer the zen that comes with traditional inking but it's making for a terrible work output (plus everything i scan in ends up looking 20% extra crappier anyway).
You say you do the lineart in batches of four? Does that mean you essentially compress the 'sketching' and 'inking' parts of the process into just one step?
How long do pages take you with the new method? (sorry to bombard you with questions. I'm just very impressed)

No problem. For me, I've pretty much eliminated sketching from my process. Very rarely, I'll use a sketch for a difficult pose or a double page spread, but even then, the sketch is very basic (just backbones). So what you said is pretty true - for the most part, I compress sketching and inking into one step.
It's hard to quantify how fast I draw pages, but for the time being, I can say that I produce about a chapter per week - (a chapter for me is 16 pages). I do all the lineart during the week and the bgs and everything else on the weekend. I also use 3D software pretty liberally for different things to streamline things. I'd say it takes me 2-3 hours to do lineart for one page, depending on the detail and number of panels. Doing things all at once makes things much much faster though. It takes me like 4-5 hours to do BG/post-processing for an entire chapter at once, which makes things easier.

In my version, it's under Help/Config (last button on the menu across the top after View and Window), and then key config.

Another tip for people who don't know, is that if you're on paint tool sai and you to to VIEW>NEW
You create a replica of the image you're drawing that stays on full view next to your canvas so when you zoom in on your original picture, you can look at the full picture next to your canvas to see how your picture will look at default without having to zoom out.

I really have to thank you for this great tutorial. It came at the perfect time to be honest. I was working on a comic to participate in an art tournament here on DA and I just kept thinking there had to be to a way to go faster and then I saw this. I was a bit skeptical that hot keys would really matter, but they truly do. I've noticed an improvement in my speed right away! I'll be zipping along in no time, so really, thank you so much for doing such great tutorials.

Thanks for the tutorial!
Unfortunatly for me, my photoshop keeps changing the shortcuts back to default I've had to tell it to use the mouse wheel to zoom (Prefer that over the keyboard shortcut because it's got greater precision/more zoom levels) about three times today...

These tutorials are really helpful!
I'm going to have to learn to draw faster because I'm heading into art school AND have too many ideas to spend an eternity on one of them.
How many pages do you draw on a good day? 900+ is impressive for two years! It takes me a week just to do one little page...
