Description ######### UPDATE 12/6/2013 #########

Hey guys. It's been a year and a half since I uploaded this tutorial and I've gotten a ton of interesting feedback. In the time that has elapsed, I have discovered advanced ways of drawing that increased my ability to draw faster. A lot of people have been asking for an explanation as to how I update so quickly, so I am going to add these new methods to this tutorial as they fall under the category of speeding up your drawing skill.

Enjoy!

Oh and I think I'll make it a tradition of listing the amount of work I've done whenever I update this tutorial with another time-saving tip/trick for you to use.

Currently my comics are at...
TSB - page 799
Hinata - page 200 (completed to page 213)
Lindbergh - page 199
TTX - page 108 (completed to page 143)
Glyphmaster - page 32
Kryth - page 2 (T-T)

So all in all, 1388 pages in 3.5 years, 397 pages per year, 1.08 pages per day.

#########

So I just reached page 699 of my longest comic, TSB, and I realized that my 2 year anniversary was last month - June 13th. That means that in 2 years, I've drawn 900+ pages.

Last week I did a tutorial on how to draw things going fast, but this week's tutorial is about all the tips and tricks that I picked up over these 2 years that allowed me to draw at such a rate while balancing my work in medical school.

Sorry it's so late! This one took me a while!

If I'm lucky and I have a day off, usually on the weekends, I can draw about 2 pages per day, but that's max. Then during the week, when I have work, I'll draw on and off and maybe fit in another page. I've made a process that's the fastest for me... Now that you bring it up, I might actually post a part B to this tutorial that involves my process... you think that'd be helpful?

You mean for actually drawing rather than just using hotkeys? (Which is not something I had thought of before, so I plan to re-assign hotkeys next time I get a chance to fiddle with that and see what works...)
It would be nice to see how to draw fast while toggling work and stuff. ^^ I keep trying to learn ways to be faster/more efficient while not sacrificing too much quality... It's difficult to strike the proper balance.

I'd have to say the best advice is to just draw at least a little bit every day, that way you'll develop a style and skill set that suit you.

I still don't know how you do all this on TOP of your real work! Most people producing that amount of pages are doing comics for a living, for you to be doing this just as a hobby still blows my mind~

verticalfish In reply to MediaViolence [2012-07-08 10:34:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it took me a while to become that efficient. For a long time, I didn't want to start a comic because it took too long for me to draw.

I really wish I had a bigger desk. i cant use shortcuts cause I can't get to the keyboard. (my laptop keyboard is way back, my tablet is in front, and my other keyboard is a pullout) but i did assign my tablet buttons to popular shortcuts, like zooming and eyedropper. and I am really fast at using a pen like a mouse. Also I'm left-handed, so shortcuts with control are hard to reach anyway when drawing. :/ lately though, I've worked in a few I can reach. :3

OH yeah, that's one of the things I was wondering about when making this tutorial - what key configuration left handed people would favor. I'm right handed, so it's hard for me to imagine using the right hand with the keyboard. Where do you place your right hand on the keyboard? Do you have your thumb on the ctrl button?

StudioGhibliRocks In reply to verticalfish [2012-07-08 14:01:47 +0000 UTC]

well, I only recently started using shortcuts, so I still need to find a better way to get to my keyboard. I guess I will use the crtl on the other side of the keyboard.. (sad to admit I forgot it existed. :/ ) I don't plan on going any farther across than the H though. To reach ctrl, my right hand stays near >? buttons.

and thanks for your concern!
