Description

Here is the way I do my crossplay makeup! It came from a lot of trial and error, and from reading tutorials and adapting the techniques. In the same way, this tutorial can give the general guidelines (or at least I hope it can), but know that everyone is different and may require a different makeup to achieve the desired look and that it’s up to you to experiment. I would say the best way to know where you need to put shadows is to look at yourself in the mirror while under an overhead spotlight; the natural shadows you see are the ones you need to recreate. Also keep in mind your character, his age, traits and complexion, and the colors you are wearing; not two of my crossplays have the same makeup.

Always take pictures of yourself when experimenting, otherwise you’ll only see yourself in the mirror and think you look awful (I still do everytime). Pictures give you the objectivity to judge your work instead and see how you can improve. Drawing over pictures of yourself in Photoshop can be good practice too!

Don’t forget to apply your makeup in a light similar to that of the convention center or photo shoot emplacement where you are going, as to correctly gauge the shadow intensity needed.

I don’t talk about highlights in this tutorial because my skin is already too pale as it is, but if you have darker skin or are wearing a darker or unnatural color in body paint, the places you can lighten are the brow, the nose line and the chin. With the body paint, I recommend using very dark of the same color on the eyes and medium dark for the other shadows.

This is personal but I am a firm believer against the use of eyeliner and mascara in crossplay (except if you’re doing stage with it, then by all means go ahead). Unless your character would wear makeup himself, I feel you shouldn’t look like you’re wearing any, otherwise you’re harming your credibility. This is why I prefer to keep to natural colors and undefined applying.

This tutorial may not be enough for those with very feminine features. In this case, prosthetics may be needed for a successful look.

I’d be happy to answer any questions or to go into more detail or theory.  And I’d love to hear from anyone who tries it out!

(Please note that I am in no way an expert in makeup; disagreeing with any of my statements is perfectly valid. )

EDIT: I've been asked about the eyebrows a lot: I don't literally lower my eyebrows by covering my own and painting new ones, I merely add more under my own and towards the nose. The covering technique can work as well, of course, there are a lot of ways to go about it. ...Sorry if that was confusing.

Thank you very much, I'm happy it can be of help!

I got the wig off eBay, the code for it is PW100. I tried searching but I haven't found anywhere that sells it and I still use mine unfortunately. I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I find it again!

Thank you.  I'm working on a Kylo Ren cosplay and while I am not going to change my hair color (it's brown but IS the right style and length), I may experiment with this to try to give myself a more masculine look for when I want to remove my mask.  I do have natural eyebrows so that should be at least some help.

Thanks!  I tried it out and it certainly made me look masculine, though I don't have the right wig and even then...I'm still not sure.  I made a pretty ugly dude.  But I'll keep this faved in case I get a chance to try again with a proper wig.

This will sound stupid but I have more of a brownish yellowish colour.(I'm Filipino) could black eye shadow work for the conturing?

Vilya0 In reply to Akuaikoshion [2015-12-30 15:50:22 +0000 UTC]

I would avoid this if possible. You can always try it out to see but dark brown eye shadow would look a lot more natural.

I don't mean to bother you, but I have a few questions on what I should do for a character I plan to cosplay as (female to male). I plan to cosplay Noiz from DRAMAtical Murder, however, the character has rather thin eyebrows and I've seen a lot of cosplayers use eyeliner to replicate the shape of his eyes.
Another factor that I am not too sure about is the character's face shape. I've seen a lot of people cosplay him with a more "feminine" shape, but others with more "masculine" shape; what I plan to use (mainly) as a reference for my own cosplay is how he looks in the game (based on cgs and such), but it's difficult for me to determine if he has a more masculine physique in terms of face shape, or not.

How would I approach those things? Do you have an recommendations as to what I should do? I have little to no experience with makeup, so I'd really appreciate the help. ^^

This is where, I think, cosplay boils down to two views: do you want to look exactly like the drawing or do you want to transpose it into reality the way it would look if the character existed in the real world? This tutorial goes with the second view. My male characters also all have thin eyebrows and defined eyes and delicate faces, but I prefer adapting because, to me, nailing the details shouldn't come at the expense of looking the correct gender. Would the character wear eyeliner in real life? No? Then interpret it as the drawing style. Does any guy have such perfect eyebrows? Absolutely not. In crossplay, if you want to have any chance at succeeding in looking like the opposite gender, you need to use all the possible typical masculine traits because the odds are against you. Hell, I still look feminine even with a beard on. So if you start going with feminine features because that's how the character is drawn, then your crossplay as a whole won't be convincing. So it's up to you: do you want to sacrifice a few details as to actually look like a guy, which is accurate to the character, or follow the drawing for a maximum visible accuracy but look like a girl?

This is crazy! When I saw the before picture I thought "She's too pretty and feminine. No way she'll be able to get it to look too masculine." I was wrong! You have very good makeup skills.

I can't say I've tried my technique on a round face before; you'll have to experiment! But there may be other tutorials for round faces out there.

OK. I could combine it with contouring that makes my face thinner, and then add the male cosplay makeup.

This is a very good question I've never thought about, hmm... I'm guessing it'd be a matter of not shaving and adding shadows with powder to make them look more muscular. I can't advise from experience, I'm sorry... I hope you find something that works through experimenting.

I have a question: I have REALLY long eyelashes, and I know that there was a part in there about uncurling them and putting some powder on them, but when I turn my head to the side you can see that I obviously have very girly / long lashes. So do you have any extra tips for making that less noticeable??? Thanks  <333

InsAnimeGamer In reply to DestryTheCat [2015-07-12 02:56:59 +0000 UTC]

sorry if its a bit late for this, but most guys tend to have longer lashes than girls if it makes you feel better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Vilya0 In reply to DestryTheCat [2015-06-10 02:44:27 +0000 UTC]

It's trickier to lessen than to add, unless you actually want to lessen your lashes as in trim them. I don't know of any temporary way to hide them except with makeup and it's only an illusion to make them less prominent. If we're talking about cosplay, and your lashes really ruin everything for you, the only thing I can suggest is that you don't turn your head to the side on pictures. Sorry I can't be of more help, good luck!

But i do have a question; I have a dark round face that looks a little bit childish, so how would i go about contouring my cheeks?

Vilya0 In reply to Kakashigirl13 [2015-06-06 16:25:57 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Ummm I can only guess since it isn't my case, but I would try contouring a lot and very dark. If this doesn't work, you might have to look into finding a way to look like a man who has a round face. Or prosthetics. Sorry I can't be of more help...
