“Where are you going this late, Peridot?” Pearl asked, looking up at the sky as the stars came out. Peridot whipped around and saw the Crystal Gems, minus Steven, watching her with amused smiles from atop the porch.

Peridot wiggled her toes in the warm sand, and Amethyst started down towards her.

“Oh uh, I just want to walk, don’t follow me!” She exclaimed, her face going green. Amethyst and Pearl traded looks, but Garnet nodded and put her hands on the other gems, turning them back inside.

“Be home before the sun comes up,” Garnet told her. Peridot pouted and nodded.

“I’ll keep that rule in mind,” she complied. Garnet closed the door, and Peridot stood there for a moment in the sand.

She turned back and looked up at the moon as it shined down on her. Biting her lip, she began to walk right.

“I hope I’m going the right way…” she muttered to herself, her gem lighting a path for her. The sand was tinted green, and the occasional crab scuttered away as she padded past them.

It seemed like she had made a complete circle when she spotted a familiar sight, a small little house with a warm yellow light coming from the windows.

Running up to it, Peridot barely stopped herself from bursting through the door. She took a deep breath, then looked down at the small porch, wiggling her toes a bit.

No, she thought. She probably moved already, looking for a better place to live. I’m probably too late.

“And why would she want to see me again after I left her like that?!” Peridot’s voice raised louder as she ended the sentence.

Quick thumping sounds got closer to the door, and for a moment Peridot thought it was one of those animals Amethyst showed her, a dog she think it was called. But the door flew open and you stood there, a baseball bat in one hand.

“Ok do you really think it’s cool to stand outside a house like that?” Your eyes trailed down to Peridot, and looked her over a few times. Was this YOUR Peridot? She gave you a nervous smile, her hands wrung together, intertwined like shoelaces.

“Peridot?” Peridot looked you over as she nodded. You had aged a bit. Not in a bad way, but you looked like you were more experienced. It made her feel at ease. But it wasn’t like she hadn’t grown at all! Just mentally though.

Peridot cleared her throat as you invited her in, closing the door behind her. Peridot took a deep breath and smelt...what was that? That smelled like what Pearl would make for Steven every now and then. Um, pancakes? Cinnamon rolls? Whatever it was, it made her feel like she could curl on the tv and relax.

Peridot turned and looked up at you, you beamed down at her in response. Although it was hard to admit sometimes, you honestly didn’t believe you’d see her again, as your hopes washed away like the water outside with every day that went by with no updates on her, and yet there she stood right in front of you, albeit a bit shorter, but that didn’t matter at the moment!

“(Y/n), I have decided to come and check up on you, as what friends do. I see nothing much has changed over this time?” She peered around at your furniture, and you realized that you hadn’t rearranged it since she left.

“Oh, not much! Sorry, I’m not much for conversation right now.” You lead her over to the couch and you both sat down. “I just can’t believe it’s really you! MY Peridot’s back!” You caught yourself as it flew out of your mouth, and a hand flew up, as if that would bring it back. Peridot looked up at you with an unreadable look on her face.

“Your...Peridot?” She asked slowly. You looked away, and you felt your cheeks go warm. Peridot sniffed and placed a hand on your shoulder. You looked over and saw her looking straight towards your tv. “I suppose that can be somewhat correctly. There IS only one Peridot here, as far as I know after all.”

“Oh, yeah!” You giggled. Peridot felt herself opening up to you, like she did with Steven. When she heard “My Peridot”, it made her think of herself as someone she could have been. Strong, powerful, a warrior. Only authority-gems like the Diamond Authority were referred to as “My”, a respectful greeting. She felt important. She wasn’t Facet-2F5L Cut-5XG. She was someone’s Peridot.

Peridot glanced up at your clock with a slight pout. She hadn’t realized how late she stayed out. You should be in bed by now (That is, if you functioned anything like how Steven did).

“Aren’t you supposed to be sleeping by now?” Peridot voiced her concern, although it wasn’t really a concern to her. You shrugged and looked at the clock.

“Probably should. Wanna come and stay with me tonight? We can catch up before bed.” She asked. Peridot bit her lip slightly.

“I promised my team members that I would be home before the sun came up. Not that I strive to listen to them or anything, but-” You cut her off with a laugh.

“It’s alright! I can call them! What are their last names?” You asked. Peridot shrugged. “Alright, first name?” Not the way you’d prefer to find people in the phone book, but Peridot answered with “Steven”.

Oh, must be that boy that lives with the gems! His last night...Juniper? Universe? Ohh Universe!

You lead Peridot to your bedroom and told her to get under the covers. She ran her fingers across the bedsheet, then snuggled under it as you left.

Peridot waited while you got Steven’s house number. She heard your voice, while muffled, and closed her eyes. She had never slept before, she didn’t the purpose. But as she watched Steven and Amethyst, and sometimes even Pearl (if she was in a decent mood), it looked peaceful.

Homeworld was restless, gems didn’t need to sleep, or eat, or do anything humans did here. It was a huge shock to Peridot when she learned of the useless things the creatures on this world did. Peridot wiggled out of the covers and sat on the edge of the bed with her right foot crossed over the left.

Then again, Peridot stopped her previous thought, it's not exactly useless to the beings on this world. Even the gems functioned a bit better with rest. But to be in a comatose state for so long? It had to be worse than being poofed, she decided.

“Alright,” Peridot jumped as you walked into the room, leaning against the doorway. “I talked to Garnet, she said it's fine, but they're coming to ‘retrieve’ you tomorrow morning.” Peridot grumbled something, but sat on the bed in silence.

You watched Peridot for a moment, before gliding over to sit beside her. Propping yourself up with your arms, you leaned back and smiled at Peridot.

“So you are probably wondering why I am still here, am I correct?” Peridot seemed to be reading your mind. You nodded and stared up at the ceiling fan as it spun slowly.

“Yeah, weren't you trying to contact Yellow Diamond?” You asked. Peridot nodded.

“I was successful in that endeavour. However, I was not able to return to Homeworld.” She looked down at the floor and intertwined her fingers together, her eyebrows knitted together. “And I will never go back again.”

You pursed your lips, deep in confusion. Did Yellow Diamond not want her back? Did the Crystal Gems not let her go home? Did they DESTROY her way to get home?

You urged her to continue, and, taking a deep breath, she placed her hands on the bed and dug her nails into the cover.

“I am a traitor.” She said bluntly, looking down at the floor. “I could not even follow one simple order from Yellow Diamond. Any moment now, she could order for my death.”

“Peridot,” your mind raced, trying to find the right words to say. “I think you’re brave for not doing what she wanted.” Peridot looked at you as if you had 3 heads. “I mean, being owned by someone else? That’s absolutely stupid!”

“Yes, but on Homeworld it is common. Humans and gems are so different, I cannot understand your species most of the time.” Peridot grumbled. “But enough of that. It is foolish to expect a human to understand gem ways, such as how it is with me.” She pointed to the pillows at the top of the bed. “You need to rest.”

“What about you?” You asked her.

Peridot looked in thought, her eyes flickering from you to the pillows, then back to you.

“Um, no.” She turned away. “To be in such a vulnerable state would spell death for me, even if you stayed awake. I will be fine.” She answered, waving you off. You bit your lip, then walked over to your closet and began to get out your sleepwear. Peridot watched you, and you glanced at her every so often. You got your sleepwear and wandered into the bathroom, then came out a few moments later fully changed.

You turned off the lights, and the house went black, the only lights were the stars and moon streaming in through the window. You got under the covers, and looked at Peridot as she sat still as a board on the edge of the bed. Her bright green eyes shown through the darkness, and her gem pulsed light softly. She looked over at you, and you wondered if she had night vision.

“We gems are designed to adapt to our environments.” You could have sworn she was reading your mind by this point. “It’s only natural that I can see in darkness.”

“Peridot, you don’t have to stay guard. What are the chances Homeworld will come to his house in particular? I know you don’t like sleeping, but just laying down will relax you a lot.” You patted the side of the bed beside you.

Peridot looked at the half of bed beside you, and turned her nose in the air. The pillow looked so comfy, and the bedsheets WERE very soft, she remembered that much from earlier. Shuffling in the darkness, she crawled under the sheet and flopped her arms down on top of the sheets. You smiled over at her, and she gave you an uneasy smile back.

“It’s warm.” She concluded. You nodded and turned on your back, staring up at the ceiling.

“Sure is.” You closed your eyes. “Good night, Peridot. I missed you.” Peridot froze as she was turning over, and looked over at you. What should she say? Good night? I missed you too? Gah, humans were so infuriating. Closing her eyes and taking a sharp breath, she made up her mind.

“I missed you too, (y/n). Good night.”
