Description
Robin's first appearance was way back in Detective Comics #38, written in 1940 by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. While I may not have even read that issue (god it's old haha), the legacy of the character has stuck with me since my introduction to him on the BTAS double-episode "Robin's Reckoning", which remains my favourite episodes of the Batman Animated Series to this day. I wanted my next piece to be a celebration of Robin and his legacy through these past 75 years, and I couldn't do that without featuring the three most notable heroes (in my opinion) to have worn the mantle.Dick Grayson is the original Robin, and while I prefer him as Nightwing, he will remain to be the best of the Robins. His synergy with Batman was perfect, and stories such as Robin: Year One, The Gauntlet, and his appearances in BTAS are few of my favourites. He also has the best origin of the Robins, with Batman taking him in not to make him more like him, but to make sure he doesn't go down the same dark path Bruce did. It was no question I would be portraying him in his original costume, and despite the awful choice of lower garments (or lack thereof) it would be a crime to celebrate Robin's 75 years without portraying Dick in this outfit.
Jason Todd is the Robin I'm least familiar with, with his absence from BTAS and few stories of him in the costume apart from Death In The Family. His reincarnation as the Red Hood however is stellar, and I've grown to love his newfound character ever since he came back from the dead. For his costume I opted for his New 52 design to contrast him from Dick, and I found the gauntlets and more militaristic design suited him far better than his original pre-New 52 outfit anyway.
Tim Drake was the Robin I grew up with. He was the Robin in the comics when I first started collecting, and he was my favourite Robin on the show especially when Dick graduated to Nightwing. He was portrayed as a Batman-lite, not as gifted as Dick nor as aggressive as Jason, but intelligent and clever to rival even the level of Bruce. He also has (arguably) the best costume of all the Robins. I ended up portraying Tim in his Young Justice costume (loved that show!), which is a slight fix of his costume before he became Red Robin.
Let's address the elephant in the room: yes I know Damian Wayne, Carrie Kelly, and Stephanie Brown aren't here. To be honest, I don't really view Carrie as a 'real' Robin since she wasn't canon, and I would rather portray Steph as Spoiler or Batgirl (loved her series pre-New 52). As for Damian, Tim Drake was always 'my' Robin, and I'm still quite bitter he took it away from him even if Tim's Red Robin persona eventually grew on me (loved that series too!). Although none of these three are Robin anymore, I decided that they would be the ones I'd featureΒ on this piece as they were the ones to carry the mantle in the majority of the character's 75 year history.
After a long period of working on this, I'm relieved I finally have it all done. Robin is mostly seen as only just a sidekick, or a hostage for Batman to rescue, however as a real fan of the character I can justify how untrue that opinion is. Like Batman, Robin has been through a lot in his long 75 year history, and ever since I watched him hop on his Batcycle in that "Robin's Reckoning" episode I just knew he was going to be a favourite of mine for years to come.

I think this art is amazing.Β I notice that you've moved the costumes around a bit, jason is wearing Tim's and Tim is wearing Dick's from Young Justice but these changes work in showing them moving from old to modern.
With regards to Carrie Kelly being canon and characters like Stephanie Brown with more than one identity I wouldn't give it a second thought; DC's continuity is very fluid, each new cartoon, video game, movie or out of continuity mini-series is a different version of the story, in one version of the story Dick Grayson is the only Robin, in another Dick, Jason and Tim are former Robins and Damien is Robin.
I enjoy great ongoing stories with continuity but unfortunately that doesn't apply to DC, their continuity is terrible, but there's nothing fans like us can do about it so just enjoy the show and don't worry about it!

Thank you so very much for your comment! I'm glad you like it and yes I agree there's nothing wrong with enjoying the characters and the stories even if continuity is murky especially after the New 52 reboot.
Regards to the moving the costumes around I actually didn't! Jason is wearing his Robin outfit from the New 52 reboot, and Tim is wearing his Robin costume from YJ season 2! They're quite similar so I understand your confusion haha!

Oh I see. I kind of proved my point which is that there are so many versions of the DC characters and timelines that even a DC Comics fan like myself can get confused and the worst part is I've read all the New 52 and watched Young Justice.
I think the New 52 was a good idea poorly executed. I like old DC continuity and knew it well enough but I understand it's off putting to new readers, notice how well everyone can follow a new version of well known characters such as Marvel movies or the Flash and Arrow, so why not reboot?Β Well the problem is the reboot solved nothing as far as Batman and Green Lantern were concerned, instead if resetting everything to one easy to follow Green Lantern they added a new one.Β
In my opinion (which no-one really has to agree with) I would have been happier if DC had decided on one Robin such as Damien Wayne and explain that the others had never been Robins. Grayson, Todd and Drake could still exist in the new New 52 timeline and they could each have a superheroic identity but they didn't have to bring their Robin continuities along that just meant that new readers now had to learn a whole new backlog in order to understand what was meant to be a fresh start.

I agree! The reboot ended up getting so convoluted that characters like Tim Drake got the short end of the stick, and as a fan of Drake I'm not too pleased with how they handled his character in the New 52. But its alright, these are still the characters we know and love and we're just lucky to have so many heroes to have graced the mantle of Robin, even if at times its confusing.

The sad part is there's no perfect solution, you can't make a version of Batman that makes everyone happy, Nolan's Batman was incredible, but there's no Clayface or Mr Freeze, Animated Batman is superb but the fans of Jason Todd aren't happy he wasn't part of it. I suppose in life we need to take our victories wherever we can find them. I wonder how the post Secret Wars Marvel Universe will turn out.Β

Definitely, the best that we can do as fans is to just love the canon for what it is and hope that our favourite characters get their time on the spotlight when they can. I myself am wondering about that too! I have to pick up a few of the issues out already, here's hoping it goes well!

One more thing I'd like to add, I'm one of those people who doesn't like change, I like Superman with his red underwear, I like Batman with the yellow oval around the bat logo on his chest, but I'm the first to admit that change is necessary to keep things relevant. If you look at characters like Mickey Mouse, Popeye and Betty Boop you'll notice they haven't changed at all since they were introduced and you'll also notice no-one really cares about them. But if you look at other characters that have remained popular you'll notice they get an update every few years, James Bond is not just recast the style of the movies changes with time, Ninja Turtles have gone from costumes to CG, Super Mario keeps getting a more refined design to match the superior graphics power of new consoles.Β
Bottom line and my point: I'm a set-in-his-ways guy who doesn't like change but change is the price we pay to stay relevant.Β
Merry Christmas!

"Robin's Reckoning" is one of the stronger episodes of the series. One of the things I liked about Batman:TAS, was how they didn't dumb down the stories.
Every story they did could very easily have been a life action episode.

I think they had one of the better versions of the Joker, too. Mark Hamill just really brought him to life. It was really a shock to me when I found out that he was the one doing his voice. I just didn't connect him with that kind of character.

Exactly! I loved how they showed his inner turmoil and how in the end how he realized vengeance wasn't the way. Absolutely top notch episode.
