Description My love for Batman began at a very young age, and ever since then, I've followed his adventures faithfully whether it's in comic books, cartoons, or film. With this piece, I opted to go for his New 52 outfit with the streamlined body-armor and gauntlets, but instead of the Bat symbol he sports today, I went instead for the symbol that was used in The Dark Knight film trilogy. The cape was a huge pain to do, and I wanted it to look like it had a life of its own as it flowed somewhat endlessly from the gargoyle he's standing on. This piece is also the first time I tried inking, and after a few trials, I managed to get it as I learned about inking techniques and source of light. My pencils are clearly inspired by his depiction in the Batman Animated Series, which was my first introduction to the character many years back. With the more updated look however, it's clear I'm also inspired by the great Greg Capullo's art for the current Batman title, and he's noted to style his work just like the cartoon with his square jaws and all.

What I found most difficult was the designing of the background and colouring the piece as a whole. This was the first time I was drawing a background and I found myself staring at various buildings in the city to inspire me, so most of these buildings are ones that I actually see everyday on my way to school! Colouring was a bit of a pain, but I've always loved how Alex Sinclair coloured Jim Lee's pages in the Hush storyline, hence I opted to give Gotham City a blueish hue to show that its more of a darker city, with lights from spotlights or windows on buildings, and a bit of smokiness to give the background a little more depth. The cracks and details I put on the wall and the gargoyle were just little things I put to give more character to the overall look, which to me showcases how old yet regal Gotham is through its architecture.

After forty five simple pieces on Marvel characters, I'm really glad I managed to step out of my comfort zone and into something that would challenge me, and honestly after finishing this I never felt more relieved. From here on, I look forward to working on more characters than ever before, and to push myself further in drawing backgrounds and ensembles that I would have initially avoided. I know I have much to learn but I'm glad with this new direction I'm making the necessary steps to learn even more, and what better way to start it all off than with none other the Dark Knight himself!

The background is always harder to draw, than the main figures, but this is what makes an art cool and can even SAVE it, when you are not a very good artist (like myself )

And this Your art looks very cool, and fantastic background does its job prefectly!

I do like it. I am quite a fan of Batman too, though I prefer him in a costume with the bat in yellow oval on his chest.

Everyone hase their preference! I'm more inclined to the classic bat logo ever since Jim Lee's Hush so that's my favorite version of the logo!

You are right. Tastes are different, so maybe this is why there are so many versions of his costume.

 Your version looks great anyway.

Batman's a character a lot of people really don't seem to get. Too often he's written as a jerk who has no respect even for those who should be his friends and loved ones (even plotting against them behind their backs), a blatant self-insert figure for the writers' own fantasies (beating up characters they personally dislike, hooking up with every woman in the DCU), or just a one-note bore whose only emotions are anger and angst. People lose sight of the fact that the guy's a human being and needs to have his moments of happiness, the capacity to smile and enjoy the good things in his life, and to have genuinely good, heroic qualities. When he's written as a well-rounded, likable, human character, Batman pops. And that's something that's been lost and forgotten over the years. Too many writers and fans want him to be shallow and one-note, and the character's suffered for that. (To be fair, Superman's equally mishandled, but that's another argument.)

I guess my own love for the character depends on how he's handled. Dark and noirish is all well and good, but humanity, nobility, and warmth are crucial to who Batman is. And those can't be removed from the character without robbing him of what makes him a great hero.

I totally agree with you. Sometimes writers forget what makes Bruce who he is, and that's someone who, despite his genius and utter brilliance, makes mistakes because he's only human. Stories such as All-Star Batman forget that and strip him if what makes him so rich in character, while other stories such as Year One and Night of the Owls prove why Batman is one of the best comic books for all these years.

Thanks for your comment! I'm glad we're in the same page here!
