Description
My submission to ConceptArt's Character of the Week, coloured up (I could only finish the grayscale version on time). The concept was a child sacrifice to Tlaloc, the Aztec god of rain.I'm still not used to painting colour over grayscale. Hopefully I'll get better at it.
Pardon the creepy subject matter.
Here's a painting progression:

It was an honor to be sacrificed, his expression isn't accurate.

Good thought, but the sacrifices to Tlaloc were children who were made to cry, because it was thought that their tears would bring rain.

besides, they believed that the children become into tlaloques, or tlaloc's helpers, that ones that break the clouds to bring rain down... nice piece

Tlaloc eh?
Doesn't stop me from feeling proud to decend from an Aztec, *looks at my arm*
Noes, hairy arm, facial hair, there also spaniard genes on me.
Man I wish I could travel back in history and see what really happened.

I love this. It's sad, morbid, and weirdly funny, too, kind of Buster Keaton sad-funny.

The colours are very vibrant for something you did first in greyscale! It's a very nice image. (: Simple, but effective.

Thanks! I didn't manage to get this coloured up by the deadline, so I had plenty of time to experiment afterwards. I can't even remember half the weird layers I put on top of this thing to get the colours looking reasonable.

Heh, well, it worked. XD It's very expressive, too. Eye-catching.

I like creepy subject matters!
The wide-eyed facial expression of shock and terror is very good. Nice job.

i really love the eyes! do you have to like colour on a multiply layer on the greyscale or something to do that?

Thanks! Yeah, you make some new layers and set them to "overlay" and "colour" instead of multiply. Actually, here's a pretty good tutorial if you're interested:
