Description Painless, and hopefully profitable for the cosplay crowd out there. I have to cast a large quantity of half-dollar sized dome jewels for Nia, and the experience has been kinda fun, so I thought I'd share it with you all. ^^

Thanks to HCC Cosplay for inspiring/instructing me to make them, though I found my own method, which is what this tutorial illustrates.

Aaaand thanks to ~spiked-stock , who pointed me in the direction of that site AND is keeping me sane while I make my Nia costume. x3 And is the best sewing teacher ever--I crashed her room for five hours the other night to make my skirt.

Hope this is helpful! Post if you have any questions!

Walmart probably is the most likely place to have it! However a craft store is a better idea!

The store was out of the resin dye where I live, would food colouring work?

It might! Give it a try!

Food colouring does not work -_-. It stayed liquid all night and wasn't the least bit tacky. The one jewel I did without the food colouring wouldn't come out of the mold either

hey i found out a little bit of watercolor (or something other like that) paint will work, if you don't mind having specs of paint in it! (tbh i did that and it looked more like a really cool stone or gem, so it was cool looking!) that might help in case you ever are out of resin dye.

I actually did end up using watercolour paints and you're right, I did like the effect it gave

oh sweet, but hey, Joann's/michael's/hobby lobby carry the resin dye (i got like three colors to mix them and that) but i honestly like it when it's solid and no specs.

Thank you for the tutorial I wish to make jewels for a cosplay and was wondering if the resin needed to be bakes? My teacher baked our resin in an oven but she said it needed to be in there for hours and it smelled bad.

OH GOSH DO *NOT*, I REPEAT, DO *NOT* bake resin!!! I am surprised that your teacher didn't burn down her house!! It only needs time and air to harden, do NOT put it in the oven. xD;

Thank you! I was a bit surprised when I learnt that it shouldn't be baked. I think my teacher used epoxy resin and it might have been a little different?
Lol I won't try to put it in the oven XD Thank you

I don't know if anyone mentioned this in previous comments, but if you mix acrylic paint in the resin it will ruin the batch. Acrylic is water based and any moisture in the resin (embedded items, including moisture in bugs/plants) will make it not work properly.

I have not had this problem; they've all worked fine for me, I've always used oil or acrylic paint to color them. At least, while using EasyCast (not traditional polyester resin). Thanks for the feedback though!

Question o.o my friend told me that easy cast kind of makes the jewelry flexible o.O is that true? I can use this for some jewels on my cosplay but is there a resin that does not make the product flexible but hard. (I want to try and make a soul gem ;

vintageaerith In reply to ninjaneko93 [2012-07-12 19:49:51 +0000 UTC]

It is true, they eventually cure to be completely hard though!
You can try the real resin stuff for completely-hard jewels, but it is much more involved (and toxic so you have to do it outside)

Really?
How about Polyester casting resin? that comes with a catalyst casting thing o.o would that work?
Oh and thank you for replying

I want to cast a diamond shape jewel. Do you think that if I made a carboard mold, reinforced with tape, it would be ok?

They're paint palettes, not molds. Anyplace that sells paint should have cheap plastic palettes!
