Description
Painless, and hopefully profitable for the cosplay crowd out there. I have to cast a large quantity of half-dollar sized dome jewels for Nia, and the experience has been kinda fun, so I thought I'd share it with you all. ^^Thanks to HCC Cosplay for inspiring/instructing me to make them, though I found my own method, which is what this tutorial illustrates.
Aaaand thanks to ~spiked-stock , who pointed me in the direction of that site AND is keeping me sane while I make my Nia costume. x3 And is the best sewing teacher ever--I crashed her room for five hours the other night to make my skirt.
Hope this is helpful! Post if you have any questions!

This was one of my first cosplays and I was pretty darn crappy at almost everything involved xD;; the bracelets are just sealed craft foam/foamies spray-painted gold!

oh, last question, where do you find the mold that has more of a octangal shape like the main green one on her neck piece? I was wondering how you did that/

They still look amazing! Still trying to figure out how to make mine! XP And thanks soo much for the jewel tutorial! I was wondering if it will cause bubbles inside of it, because I've seen some that do (i mean in real life) and was wondering how to avoid that.

It works with acrylic, but the jewels are not as clear and shiny. It can be fixed adding that silver paper used in the kitchen on the non visible side of the jewel.

It would be nice if you added in the description how much the products could cost and where they can be found.

I notice you are not from the USA...I apologize, but though I did list where they can be found (in step 1), I can't really be of much help for international visitors. =/ Sorry about that. Resin costs about $10 USD where I live.

In my tutorial I used acrylic paint instead of dye.

Awesome tutorial. Double mixing is to ensure that the base and hardener have mixed properly. It works wonders on silicone when I was doing molds for early projects and most if not all cured exactly when double mixed .

well after ALOT of searching i did find something (it's expesive though) but then I can't find the shapes I need for it...do you think I can use a homemade shape made with fimo-clay?

vintageaerith In reply to Linnzy [2011-09-18 17:58:43 +0000 UTC]
I've heard that sometimes the resin (since it heats as it reacts, it's an exothermic reaction) has trouble in a clay mold...you can certainly give it a try! Maybe coat the mold in some kind of acrylic spray first to seal it?

hmm...okay...otherwise I'll have to find someone that makes them and put in a commission....
you don't take commissions?

vintageaerith In reply to Linnzy [2011-09-18 18:15:38 +0000 UTC]
I do take commissions! I could do them for you, certainly! I'd just ask you to pay me whatever the resin costs, and shipping over to you! Honestly it's such an easy thing to mix and make that I wouldn't charge you anything for me actually doing it...just materials and shipping. c:

another way to do this is the melt hot glue into the mold and mix in the color die, then let dry, then cover in clear nail polish. ^^ i'm cheap so thats the way i do it haha, great tutorial though!

vintageaerith In reply to katmac57 [2011-08-23 01:01:18 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I guess that would work too, yeah! The only thing is that you'd probably have to have the glue SUPER-hot so that it doesn't clump hitting the mold, right? I have a low-temp hot glue gun, although I might try this if I get desperate for all the tiny little jewels I have to do for Astha from Trinity Blood. xD Thanks for the tip!!
