Night-time, The Outskirts of Ice Territory

Shabeel sat down to wait for Zadar to explain why he wanted to stay back for a moment. Slouching over slightly as usual, she watched her best friend's face in the fading twilight. Stars twinkled reflectively in those green eyes almost mimicking his nervous, yet positive expression. From a hidden bag under his mane he produced two small accessories: an earring and a braid clip. It was when Zadar started describing the meaning of the objects that her breath unknowingly caught in her throat. Then came the question. "Shabeel, will you be my mate? To be with each other through thick and thin, through everything the world throws at us?"

She stared down at the rune-marked gems then back up at Zadar's hopeful face. They had already been through so much together: a raid on their camp, an avalanche, rescuing Tolmi... it would be impossible to imagine going into any of that again without him by her side. The answer was obvious.

"I will. Zadar, I will be your mate." Shabeel spoke calmly and assuredly. This was what she wanted, what she needed.

A broad grin captured Zadar's face as soon as the words left her lips. "You have no idea how happy this makes me." He then eagerly tapped a claw on the empty green gem of his braid clip, ready for her to choose a rune.

"I think I have an idea." Shabeel's whiskers twitched before she looked down on the accessory in thought. She knew nothing about Viking runes and their meanings, but surely Zadar would know if she described what she was looking for. She thought hard for a long moment on how she would define what she saw in the lion. He saw her as strength, his strength in particular. She should choose something of equal weight if not more. "Is there a rune that means defense, trustworthiness, or... an honest cat who can be relied on?"

"Eihwaz." Zadar answered almost right away, scratching a sort of reversed 'Z' in the peridot gemstone. "It's perfect."
