Description
Just an attempt to sum up a general feeling. So long, NYC. I think I'll come back soon.
Time: 6+ hours
Tools: Paint Tool SAI, Photoshop Elements 2
References used briefly for fish, water, and little town/city in the background.
I'm pretty happy with the sky this time around. The colors and cloud forms are way better than in "Cloudy Day," which is still kind of shameful...

The first thing i notice is the happiness of the steed and the awe in the girl's face. Your work with the water is amazing and very realistic and fits perfectly with the rest of the piece. I love how you threw in the gondola in the background and the fish swimming around it's feet. Your vision with the clothing and how you perfectly shadow each fold is just astounding. Again i have you give you props, for the wonderful creature design. Everything flows in this piece and you've made it a story in a picture. It is a wonderful mix of fantasy and Venice, Italy.

First off, I adore the perspective. Always been a fan of compositions that provide both an underwater and sky environment. The details and color you created are so lively and contribute to the joyous atmosphere of the piece.
The sky turned out quite nicely. The colors make for a convincing afternoon setting, and the clouds are rendered beautifully [especially the ones on the left side].
Another clever color choice you used was making the character don yellow robes: It lets me know where to focus. Using hints of yellow throughout the composition really helped to tie things together too.
My main critique lies in the sky. I feel like there should be more of it, because it seems cut off at the top. With the composition as it is now, the character seems trapped, when I think you were going for a free and light atmosphere. Perhaps doubling the amount of sky can take that feeling of compression away?
Besides that, this piece rings solidly as a fantastical painting!

Thanks for the critique!
You definitely picked up on the fact that I was conflicted on how much weight to give the sky and water. I actually broke most of my own guidelines with this picture - putting the main subject dead-center, drawing the horizon line basically in the middle of the canvas - so it's good to hear what didn't work visually and why.
I didn't include as expansive of a sky as I usually do because I wanted to zoom much closer in to the subject, but would the sky feel less confining if I'd painted the clouds differently? i.e. - pulled the clouds even further back into the painting (placing them farther away from the viewer), or even moving/shrinking the buildings so that there is more space behind the main subjects?
Taking your suggestion would definitely remove the whole problem of bisecting the canvas, though... Anyway, thank you very much for the advice. ^^

No worries!
I think the main reason why the piece feels confining is the top edge feels so close to the subject's head. Even just another 1/2" increase to the top of the canvas could work, I think.
I do applaud you for going against your own guidelines & trying a bi-sectioned composition! It's always fun to break the 'rules' of art now and again.

Thanks! The perspective was inspired by those dioramas in a natural history museum.

This reminds me of The Never-ending Story, mainly Atreyu.

I had to google that, but I see what you mean. Atreyu looks a little creepy to me though, in terms of design..
