Wow this is really nice...a lot more delicate and subtle than how i've seen her portrayed all my life (been born an raised in Bengal; Durga is one of the primary goddesses worshipped). To be honest, I much prefer your version

The picture's awesome. Question; do you happen to know what Durga's tiger's name is? I'm trying to do research and I can't find it anywhere.

As far as I know, the tiger does not have a name but is used primarily as a symbol rather than being a companion creature. There may be some Hindu authors who attribute a name to it, however.

Thanks for replying. Actually, I asked a Hindu friend of mine and he told me the tiger's name is Gdon. Wasn't a symbol, it was a large tiger she rode that could produce flames. Don't know if that means he breathes fire or if it just emanates from him. Thanks again for getting back to me; and your artwork is most excellent.

Really? Well that's interesting! Thanks for letting me know! Using that name + Durga in Google, I was able to find this page: [link]
Apparently it's a tigress!

Hey thanks! That page was useful - I didn't know about Gdon's gender or other name. Now I can add that info to my mythology guide as well. You and Maoi666 were both really helpful and it's much appreciated

tight around her and the tiger.......that picture you showcased of mine was much bigger. Someone suggested I crop it 'cause I had too much sky. Now I was kinda put out by this 'cause I loved my background. Yet I tried it..... and I realized he was right. The picture suddenly had so much more impact.

Absolutely great image. The compositing is super, not only with the image of Devi herself but with how you have placed her and the tiger in the midst of everything - the composition is excellent. Really nice balance. The tree itself is a wonder, appears to be a huge banyan which is perfectly fitting.
The colour choice is just fantastic; you pull and paint the oranges and reds from her and the cat and the flames to such a striking effect. Beautiful highlights and shadow throughout. I have to ask; did you choose this colour scheme especially because of who she is and the association she has with the autumn months? If so, what a lovely wink to traditional western notions of Autumn.
Technically and thematically, your work just keeps leaping forward. It's a joy to see each new piece. I truly hope you'll be able to do something for the Autumn Country contest.

*lets see if DA will let me reply THIS time.... grr...* >
First off, THANK YOU for such a great comment! The fire outside the "cave" pretty much set the color tone, but I would have picked reds and oranges anyway because those are the colors I most associate with traditional Indian art. (The tree was elongated to twice the original height. I flipped the roots upside down and then clone stamped bits and pieces of it to make it cavernous. Did it fool ya?)
Second, yes absolutely I intend to enter the Autumn Country contest. I can see the piece I want to do in my head but I have yet to find the stock to accomplish this. But I am still looking! (I suppose asking the judge to do a requested stock image would be in bad form?) LOL
Contest aside, it would be fun to do some "illustrations" for the website, should it ever get further along.

Well, I'm only one of the judges, and I'm the 3rd most objective person I know, so if you need an image just say the word - it'll have no bearing on the judging.
Funny you should mention that, because he's made a couple comments already about what beautiful illustrations the entries thus far would make for this story or that idea. Aside from the fact that since the contest started he's posted a new vignette and is now in pre-prod on two short 'video illustrations' that expand one of the plot lines. I love it when I'm right.
