Chalk pastel on 11"x17" chalk and charcoal paper. These two are from when I was toying with human form designs of some of the massive birds from Native American myths like the thunderbird and piasa image on the cliffs of the Mississippi river in Alton, Illinois. I had the idea of shape-shifting birds. This is the other image born of this pondering

They said that Mawapish was not born but created and appeared fully formed. Her mother, or creator if this is true, heard these rumors early on and always smirked. "I spent nineteen years away in the wilderness perfecting my fully formed creation," she laughed. If Mawapish had indeed been created, she did not remember it any better than a person remembers being born. Strangely, she did not seem to remember more than the last year of her time in the wilderness. "Clouds rose from the valley below us, and the air was always strangely cold. My head throbbed all the time. There was a ringing in my ears. I think I must have learned something from the spirits that is not meant to be taken elsewhere in this world. Perhaps that is the reason I can't remember..."
