Pattern page one: [link]Pattern page two: [link]
You'll need 1/3 yard of material, matching thread, and the usual sewing equipment (scissors, thread, etc). Machine not required - I sew everything by hand. This makes an 8-inch tall pony, but the pattern can also be enlarged or shrunk; adjust material requirements accordingly.
This is as simple as I can make the pattern and still have it look decent! Anyone who can knows the basics of sewing will be able to use this.
If you don't know how to backstitch or ladder stitch, there are several tutorials here on DA and on YouTube.

Just finished my pony with this tutorial! Realized using black fabric was a -really- bad idea, however I made my way around it. I'm doing Nightmare Moon and tomorrow I just have to make and attach the mane and make the wings. I'm kinda doing a different kind of wings since the larger ponies like her and Celestial have large and more defined wings. Then after I get that down, I have the eyes, cutie mark and armor to make and attach.

I'm curious but what is the white that is sewn with the fabric? Stabilizer?

Yes, that's iron-on interfacing.

This tutorial and your pattern are great. I am currently using them to make a sort of memorial plush in memory of our 27 year old horse that we just had to put to sleep. I am making it out of white fleece and actual hair from our horses mane/tail. I'll make sure to post up pics once its done.

Glad my pattern was useful for you.
I have only once had to have a pet put to sleep, and you're right, even when it's the only kind thing to do it is a painful and hard decision.

Yeah and it never gets any easier despite what other people say. So far in my life I've lost at least 13 animals (not including fish) and out of those 13 4 had to be put to sleep. I really appreciate that you put your pattern up on DA it came in very helpful and now I plan on making a plush each time one of our horses passes that way I can still always give them a big hug when I need it ^_^

What is something fairly cheap that I can use for a mane and tail? I will be making a 5-6 inch pony so? How can I get the eyes to look good like yours? And does it matter what kind of paint I use for the Cutie Marks? Sorry if I seem annoying. I just want a perfect pony to call my own.

Fleece for a shaped mane, felt for a cut and layer mane, both are pretty inexpensive. For the eyes you can use iron ons or photo prints. For paint, plain old acrylic craft paint is what I used.

I like this pony pattern. What would be a good fabric to use that is soft, unlike felt? If I made something like this, I would not personally use felt. I would want something light and soft. What would you suggest? And... well, I'm kind of new to the world of sewing, so how would I alter the pattern to make an Earth Pony standing to about 5-6 inches tall? My mom and sister are great sewers, they could help me, but just wondering? For a pony that small, about how much would it cost? I'm sorry if I seem annoying, it's just that I've always wanted a pony plushie and now I have the chance... I just don't want it to look all funky. I love this pattern and tutorial though!!

If you're new at sewing, fleece would be your best bet. It's easy to work with and inexpensive. I can't tell you the exact price, because that varies by store, area and so on - your best bet is to go to your local fabric store and see what they have to offer.
To make a 6 inch pony, enlarge the pattern so it's about 7 inches tall from ear tip to hoof.
Hope this helps!

Honestly, I don't think that would work very well - the paint would form a crust and look gross. To get the same look, you might try craft pom poms instead.

Thanks, but I don't have any pink pom-poms... I'm gonna wait until I can go to a fabric store and get pom-poms and real fabric instead of cotton balls and old shirts.

quick tutorial about mane and tails ?

Voodoo-Tiki In reply to AEgwinn [2012-08-20 18:13:46 +0000 UTC]
The cost really depends on what materials you're using, whether or not you have to buy sewing supplies, where you live (I only know prices for materials in the USA) that sort of thing. As long as you already have the equipment, you can likely make one for under $15. Check around for a fabric store near you, or a hobby/crafts store, or a big box store with a craft section.
There's a tutorial for manes and tails in the gallery.

You could probably use the stallion head, then lengthen the neck and legs.

Great tutorial and pattern! I'll be giving it a try for some personal pony plushies I've been meaning to make but that don't fit in my schedule as my regular full size ponies.
May I also ask where you get your fur? I've been looking around for somewhere to buy long pile fur like on your ponies but nothing's really come up yet.

I get small cuts of long pile fire from Ever After Fabrics on Etsy, they're the perfect size and that way I don't have to pay for a full yard.

Hey voodoo. Just a quick question. Do you know any kind of fabric that should NOT be ironed? Also, do you mind if I use this pattern for commissions?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Voodoo-Tiki In reply to lilymalady123 [2012-08-11 14:22:11 +0000 UTC]
Well, you have to be very careful ironing velour, because it can melt, and don't iron faux fur at all.
And yes, it's ok to use the pattern for commissions, with attribution.
