Description
So, after having to upgrade my RAM to be able to work on this map, and still having to wait for ages every time i opened the map or did anything, the Inner Sea map I started a few years ago is finally done.
I had stopped a while ago after flattening the image with no backup by mistake and had to practically start over from scratch, so gave up. Since then I'd made a lot of changes to the topography anyway so it would have been outdated by now anyway! The map focuses on the main region of my conworld, where more of the atlas maps I've made are located. For a list of all the maps you can check here .
The map is HUGE so i had to reduce the map in size by almost 50% to be able to upload it here. The full-size unedited version can be found on my site, here .I'm really glad this is done as it was such a slog to get through. Photoshop stopped numbering the layers when i exceeded 3000 text layers so I have no idea how many layers there were before I rasterised them...

So was this at some point an open sea and then became enclosed, or is it different?

ignoring ancient tectonics, its similar to the Mediterranean sea, but until a few decades ago the eastern part led to another sea, but lowering sea levels left the strait dry, one of two exits no more. Today the Gates of Erebeth ot the west are the only link to the greater oceans. more on this can be found on the sidebar on the right labelled the Strait of Narthel

Thanks
If you plan on going the topographical route, I urge you to use illustrator rather than photoshop as its such a good tool for this type of work .
Artifexian, a very good worldbuilder with a great youtube channel, has made some tutorials for just that, based off of my workflow that you can check out - www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQvwgPā¦

your level of detail is *insane*
totally in a good way.
so, what has caused the narrowing of the Gate of Erebeth (and the diminishing of the Inner Sea)? Is an approaching Ice Age lowering sea levels?

Thanks
Elyden is a dying world, so there are various factors. the sun is getting weaker, leading to the world cooling, so increasing ice cover is a big contributing factor.

so thanks for taking the time to respond!

no problem, and possibly- its not something I really mention much as most of the posts tend to be centred around the maps.
