Nicely drawn, but Russian equipment suck hard, why the hell anyone would use it?

Because she's Czech? Because Russian equipment has proven itself to be sturdy and reliable over a countless multitude of wars? Because it is not maintenance-intensive while being accessible and cheap?

Czech use western uniform and weapons.
Russian uniform and gear suck so much that even our guys use western whenever they can get it. Armored vests much heavier then western with the same level of protection. Weapons outdated so much that even "sturdy and reliable" is not an argument anymore.

Who is "our guys"?

Current czech use lots of former Soviet-spec gear and uniforms, there's still a lot of legacy left from the Czechoslovakian Social Republic, starting from the T-72Ms to the entire BVP, AMS, PRAM and OT series to the AK-inspired Vz58, Mi-35 helicopters and Kub SAMs, the recent switch to the BREN and 5.56 ammunition has more to do with standarization with the west than obsolesence, same with Poland. The Kirasa ballistic vest she's drawn with weighs around 4.7kg in her size, not much of a stretch from the 3.5kg of the Interceptor vest, the discrepancy is mainly because the US uses ceramic while Russia uses titanium for the strikeplate.

And I'd like to know how is an AK-74M or PKM "outdated". In the sense that it isn't covered in attachment rails or something? The action and ammunition are proven and work perfectly in modern circumstances, there's not many ways an assault rifle can be outdated. You mean the more sophisticated equipment? Like those Metis-Ms that scrapped Merkavas back in 2006 or the Strela-2 that brought down an AC-130 in 2003? None of the equipment she's wearing (Gorka suit, Maska-2Sh helmet, Alfa-302 radio, etc.) in this image is particularly outdated by modern standards...

Lastly, I use the equipment more as a means to give the character some visual personality than making her an unstoppable tacticool 1337 CoD Patrol operator. Warsaw Pact gear generally is far less modular, more roughly built and disorganized-looking, which fits the character more than giving her a slab of ESBI armored vest covered in MOLLE stripes.

Russian guys.
Unlike foreigners I know how it is in reality.
Russian armored vests weight twice as much as western with the same level of protection, you probably misunderstood that Kirasa has many variants which differs in level of protection.
Now just so you know in Russia recently they said about new standard army west - and it weights not less then 10 kg (old with titanium plates were ~16 kg).
Russians use titanium cause can't make ceramic. Russia also can't produce Kevlar, such materials come from abroad.
That Gorka just a parody on normal uniform. Western uniform hundred years ahead considering utilitarian design, materials, quality and comfort. Russians always sucked at making normal clothes, whether it was military or civilian.
All vehicles mentioned by you actually very outdated, BTR, BMP and T-72 particularly uncool. Wars showed it well. In fact you maybe heard that Russian military bought Iveco cause Russian vehicles suck. They also testing Italian Centauro and German Boxer.
Mi-35 just simple modernization of old Mi-24 and by the way Ataka anti-tank missiles which used by such heli not even close to Hellfire. Mi-28 by the way lost in competition with Apache in India.
By the way reliability of roughly built Russian vehicles actually pretty low. Maintenance always a problem.
And yes, accuracy of Russian firearms is too bad for modern standards and quality of ammunition very poor, not to mention that we still use old 7,62 mm round for machineguns and sniper rifles. Lack of attachment rails of course disadvantage too and there is much more things that already standard in the West and still not implemented in Russia, despite being combat proven and very convenient.
As for Czech, I guess main reason why old equipment still in use - lack of money (same problem in Russia).
Generally, unstoppable tacticool is normal and what Russian military use - simply piece of crap. And you find it nice only cause you never dealt with that in real life.

I didn't mention any vehicles, BTR, BMP or T-72, the latter of which has always been meant to be the cheap alternative to T-64 so no surprises that it's not up to game with the most recent Western tanks, it was never meant to be. I mentioned the very old Soviet-era missiles which have proven themselves in the battlefield despite being crude and badly kept compared to its western analogues, TOW, MILAN or Stinger. Innaccuracy of Russian guns is mostly due to the poor quality of ammunition issued as far as I know. Also as far as I know Russia has local manufacture of Twaron and boron carbide production for main battle tanks, though I may be wrong with that one, would be good to.

You shouldn't really take me for one of those people who think Russia is invincible in real life. I know what an Ataka or a Mi-35 is, I'm just saying that just because it's less efficient than gear made by the US or some European countries it doesn't mean it's literally unusable. Unstoppable tacticool covered in armor is by no means the standard, the vast majority of third and second world countries still use arrangements from the 1970s.

First of all old Soviet anti-tank missiles like Malutka were very demanding to operator - he controlled missile in flight by joystick watching at missile's tracer. That was way too difficult and real effectiveness in combat was pretty low. Concurs actually first really good anti-tank missile and still its inferior to modern western, its only semi-auto targeting - operator must keep target in sight all the time manually.
Now old Soviet SAMs wasn't that good either, big, heavy, expensive and weak against countermeasures. They still are. And their range also inferior to western analogues. Real effectiveness of Patriot probably better than such of any modification of S-300. Russian missiles never tested against real targets. New Pantzir for example wasn't tested against targets protected by countermeasures or against many targets simultaneously and seems like there is a reason why.
Oh, did I mentioned that Russian air defense crews trained to launch two or three missiles at once at single target? That says a lot about real capability of those.
Strela was worse than Stinger and even Igla probably.
Now if we would talk about air to air thats even worse. R-27 considered as fail, R-60 wasn't that good either, R-73 was a bad copy of Sidewinder and still our most reliable and effective missile. New RVV-AE still inferior to AMRAAM and Russian air force actually don't have any!
It worth to mention that even non counting all of the above MiG-29 had hardware problems with lock in a dogfight.

Less efficient gear - simply shit, payed by soldiers lives.
By the way we had one officer arrested because he (in exchange for money) accepted contract for supply of armored vests that actually couldn't stop bullets.
Third world actually buying Russian or Chinese weapons. Anyway comparing Russian weapons to third worlds weapons is hardly compliment to Russians. That tells for itself. Yeah, shit.
Only US and Western Europe can be counted as real makers of modern normal military equipment. What you call Tacticool is normal modern standard of any normal modern country (not fucking third world's) and the only way to keep soldiers well and win a war. Keeping soldiers like animals and spending them as ammo even Russia can't accept today, cause we have serious demographic problems and military very unpopular in Russia. Casualties can't be replaced. In fact even reduced Russian army's units still short of manpower - there is not enough Russian young men and its getting worse.

Not on wheter or not your soldiers are using MOLLE getups and have triple tandem sights on their Magpul-covered M4s

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LoginTrap In reply to VoughtVindicator [2012-10-22 11:27:18 +0000 UTC]

MOLLE allow to carry a lot of ammunition with comfort, while Russian soldiers in warzone always feel that they have not enough of ammo and its difficult to carry.
Sights allow to aim quick, easily and well and even shot accurate at night. Russian military in Chechnya showed awful performance at night action, when insurgents very active. Simple night vision, not to mention termal sights is something unusual in Russian army.
Overall - its bad to be poor and unable to make high tech gear that gives advantage over the enemy. Without that advantage you have to pay by blood of soldiers.

Malyutka or Falanga are no worse than other MCLOS missiles like Dagger ot ENTAC, it was much more a matter of ATGM technology being in its infancy than Russians making shitty weapons, and even so they quickly developped Fagot shortly before TOW was designed, Konkurs was more of a development. There is nothing really wrong with semiautomatically guided missiles, with the exception of Javelin anad Spike, all modern ATGMs are SACLOS... ERYX, HOT, HJ9, Kornet, TOW2, MILAN, etc, etc. It's not like they are a sign of a country's military being outdated or crude.

SAMs and air-to-air missiles were commonly fired in pairs by the US too as a way of ensuring target destruction in case one of the missiles failed to pick up the lock, not detonating, etc. And range isn't really everything that matters. Even the crappy early Dvina variants in vietnam were a rather unique system, back then there was no system that was in any way similar in the NATO countries, a semi-mobile strategic SAM. Closest around was Roland and Hawk, both short range tactical missiles. The failure of those systems in war has more to do with untrained crews and the development of new tactics by opposing countries, in Kosovo they were pretty survivable despite being outdated and achieving few kills thanks to crews who knew what they were doing. As far as BVR missiles go, you still have R-37, R-33, R-74, the developmental K-100 and others. The failure of the R-27 isn't really surprising considering that brand new US AMRAAMs in Vietnam was about 15%... a decades-old stock of unmaintained missiles handled by Africans isn't bound to do much.

That, and considering neither second 'or third world using 'tacticool' getups, it can't really be said it's the world standard, so this character isn't really using equipment that is far-fetched... wars are fought and won without that kind of technology all the time. Winning a war is a more a matter of strategic mivements, good officers, solid intelligence and morale... not

Soviet Union sent trained SAM system's crews to Middle East and they couldn't stop Israelis with their missiles.

US in Vietnam used AIM-7 Sparrow. AMRAAM new and better missile already modernized several times. Russians still use old crap.

Fail of R-27 have nothing to do with Africans, there is no sign that Russian air force could use it any better.
Actually there was Russian and Ukrainian mercenaries in Africa who launched them.

First of all normal uniform and gear makes it easer to fight. Particularly modern protection saves lives.
In fact for example good winter uniform well developed in the West, while you would expect that from Russians. But no, our conscripts freezing to death (literally) today. This is not a rare occasions - typical situation every year - dozens of men dying cause uniform is crap. For that reason (I bet you never heard) Ministry of Defense ordered to keep soldiers indoors if temperature drops below 5 C.
As a matter of fact there is always a question - simply how to walk, cause our boots used to be really shitty. New one somewhat better, but only for a summer. There is no proper winter boots, only valenki. And not even ask me about socks, Russian military never heard about them.

It does. Normal soldier's gear always was a problem in Russian army. And all weapons and vehicles outdated too much now.
So to say, things you can see on Russian military expos you'll never see in actual Russian military.

IgorKutuzov In reply to LoginTrap [2012-10-21 08:53:14 +0000 UTC]

maybe in the 50s and 60s but not nowdays it's not like that the issues Russian army gear had are now solved because they now bought gear from private manufacturers that have a quality that is more than enought to be considered equivalent of US gear... true they don't look as advanced but it's not the looks what counts it's the practical use and it works... for sure !

and outdated weapons ? i want to remind you US army use the M-16 that is almost 50 years old and that's actually far more delicated and easy to jam than the AK rifle family that instead keep updating and getting better just look at the modern AK-107 with recoil reduction, the M16 istead keep remaining the same as well as the M4 just outer modifications such as opitonals rails, mechanical updated weapon as the HK416 are just refused for the NMH (Not Made Here) syndrome and have just accepted by Delta Force... because special forces have the freedom to get what they want...

oh that reminds me... just like the russians... BUT in the 50s and 60s

LoginTrap In reply to IgorKutuzov [2012-10-22 07:10:42 +0000 UTC]

I'm living in Russia and actually can tell you that our and foreign gear are not comparable in quality, today (not in 50s -60s, in fact soviet from 80s was bad too). All new Russian gear is bad copies of western. Anyone prefer real western, the only reason why Russian gear in use is lack of money.
Yes its not look that counts and you judge Russian gear by how it looks. But quality really inferior and and practical use show us that western much better.

AK-107 was never seen in army (and never will be) and M-16 much more modernized than any modification of AK. M-16 definitely not the same and in fact very reliable. AK on the other hand can jam too and in Russian military soldiers trained to deal with weapon jams. They also told to keep weapon clean, for obvious reasons.
Quality and effectiveness of western ammo also much better.
