Description
Step one: Never ignore your instincts. Was that movement at the corner of your eye? Maybe you heard something out your window? Someone behind you sounds like they're walking a little too quickly for your comfort...
When something inside you is telling you something is wrong, chances are, something is. Lets call this our survival instinct. Animals have them, and they don't ignore them. They act. The difference with us humans is that we doubt ourselves. We tell ourselves we're being paranoid, that it was nothing. “It was just the wind”, “It was probably an animal”, or, everyone's favorite: “It was just my imagination.”
Eventually, it comes to a point you're in denial. You think that if you ignore it and pretend it's not there, then it'll go away. You've given your enemy the upper hand.
Step two: Don't give in to paranoia.
With step one in mind, it's important not to become constantly afraid. That fear and paranoia only feeds what it is you're afraid of. You start to see things that aren't really there, your fear growing and growing until you're nearly mad with it. Your enemy feeds off from that fear, and does whatever they, or it, can to increase it.
Step three: Don't let fear consume you.
Even though fear can sometimes save us, it can also betray us. When you give in to fear, you're driven senseless. You don't think clearly, you do whatever it is your instinct tells you. Usually, one of three things can happen: you thrash around madly, hitting anything within reach. You run away as fast as you can in any direction, just as long as it's far away from where you were. Or, you freeze, standing perfectly still, literally frozen in terror.
When you're afraid, you need to keep yourself calm enough to stay in control. To plan an escape route, a way to stall your enemy, then run when you have the chance. When you do get that chance, obviously running deep into the woods is a huge no-no. Your best chance is running toward civilization, to groups of people. Whatever is chasing you will likely be discouraged and give up. But sometimes, running may not even be an option. In fact, sometimes it's the worst idea. You're probably one of those people sitting through the movie thinking: why doesn't that girl just turn around and kick the guy in the nuts?! That's what I'd do!
This would be one of those times to test that theory. When you're running, and it doesn't look like you'll make it, your best chance of survival may be to stop and turn around. Face your enemy. Who knows, this might throw them off guard. They could be all bark and no bite. Then throw yourself at them with everything you've got; blind them, break their leg, anything to give yourself an advantage and make it out alive. In the wild, wolves don't go after prey that fight back, or the strongest of the herd. Again, this could discourage whatever it is that's after you, and make them go away. Or, at the very least, the nightmare will be short, and ended quickly.
Now, the purpose of this writing is to, say, “prepare you”. We're afraid of something out there, aren't we? Whether it's the dark of the unknown, or a real, living person who wishes to harm you, there are a number of mistakes made that are common in these scary movies and stories you watch or listen to, some of which are true. These steps were made in hopes of fixing them, and keep you from repeating them.
There's just one last step to go over. Don't worry, it's an easy one.
Step four: Look behind you.

After reading that last comment I decided to turn around myself. But then, I was leaning on the side of my bed so instead I just...looked upside down?? I don't know how you call it, but I looked behind me anyway.
I saw my curtain.

Ok, this was seriously clever. I love how it started out as one of those typical 'how to survive' lists that people write for a laugh. Yeah it was more serious than most but it was still enjoyable to read and very well written. All of the points made were logical and sensible, exactly how you should act in situations like this.
Then I read step four.
I still haven't looked behind me.
So that was a fantastic twist, extremely subtle and well done. I'm not very easily scared so the fact that I am point-blank refusing to turn around tells me that this was a freaking great piece of writing. Utterly amazing, and incredible work for a first time horror. Keep it up mate, for scaring the hell out of me you've got a new watcher

VoxMagi In reply to ANGELWOLFCHILD [2013-08-16 01:33:27 +0000 UTC]
Wow, I never expected a comment like that! The fact that this is successfully frightening people alone is surprising. Thank you so much for the compliment, I wish I could say I regret terrifying you, but that would be a lie *insert evil smirk here*.
What you said was exactly the effect I was going for, and so far it appears I've been successful in throwing people off guard. I'm very happy to hear you've enjoyed the read and think so highly of it, and honored of the watch. For that, I thank you! 8D
I definitely want to try writing future creepypastas, but the progress will be slow I'm afraid and I think I'll only be able to do it when I've had a struck of inspiration like I wrote this one haha. After all, I want to prevent writing the same stories that are already out there, and there are a lot. Nonetheless, I'll be doing by best and try to improve my writing by writing in different genres!

If you did regret terrifying me then you wouldn't be writing horror now would you
You're entirely welcome, this was an utterly fantastic piece. I'm attempting to write my own creepypasta at the moment so it's always fantastic to see new ones pop up, especially when they are so unique like this one. It always helps spark inspiration for me (and tells me to get off my backside and actually do something).
Don't worry about it being slow, the best stuff always comes with time (hence my need to still actually attempt one). And if you can keep creating really original stuff like this then that would be absolutely epic

Indeed
Oh really? If you eventually do finish it, please feel free to message me so I can give it a read! Creepypastas are always thrilling to read heh heh. I get what you mean, though, after I wrote this I've been pretty lazy and haven't written much when I should XD I hope this really sparked your inspiration, though!
So very true, though I gotta admit I'm a little envious of writers who are able to do it within a week at most haha. Stories like this at any rate. Thank you again, and good luck on your own stories friend!

*Tilts head* I'm afraid I don't understand, I don't watch Doctor Who (though I have caught glimpses of some shows), I only recognize a few popular references and that's mainly because of being online ^.^' Like the "Don't blink" or the time machine (at least I think that's what it is) whose name I can't really spell but starts with a "T". I have no idea who Sally is or how a laptop is involved~
I'm glad you like the story, though! And I do find the comparison like a compliment, due to hearing that particular phrase and anything involving it is frightening to Doctor Who fans xD

Oh it's a pre-recorded message from The Doctor on a laptop to some lass who only appears in this one episode.
Well I would show you the episode but it has traumatized me and many of my friends. The premise was there are these stone "statues" in the form of an angel crying into her hands, hence why they were called Weeping Angels, but they aren't crying, they're shielding their eyes so they don't see each other. It's their defense mechanism; when they're looked at they turn into statues (you can't harm stone)
As soon as you turn around, as soon as you blink they start to move, and boy can they move, they can move across a room in...well...the blink of an eye.
Also his time machine is the TARDIS, it stands for Time and Relative Dimensions In Space, meaning it can go to any time zone of anywhere.
(Interestingly enough it also contains a dimension within it, the outside isn't much bigger than a porta-loo but the inside is infinite, the common phrase people say when they enter it is "It's bigger on the inside?!.....")
If you DO wish to see it, Here's the Don't Blink Speech (don't watch it at night or on your own)

and here is Amy in the Tardis (the latest version of it)

I'm definitely familiar with the Weeping Angels, it's nearly impossible not to be xD If one hears about the "don't blink" reference, they have to have heard of them, too, at least lol I also have a friend who's a HUGE Doctor Who fan who's told me a lot about them along with some other very scary monsters in the series (if I didn't know better, I'd have though it was a horror genre), but that's all I'm familiar with.
Now that I didn't know, though, about the Tardis being bigger on the inside 0.o
I know what it looks like, so I can definitely understand how people would react that way when first stepping into it, it probably would've been mine too XD
*Is tempted to do so* Depending on how long it is I might, my laptop can't load lengthy videos very well. Also, it's night and I'm on my own, and though I usually think I can handle scary stuff and most of the time can, from what I've seen from pictures/gifs all over the internet, let's play videos, and the few glimpses I've caught in Doctor Who episodes when flipping through channels, the Weeping Angels truly look frightening >3>
