I love the idea of completely abandoning explorer. With each new version we only lose previous native functionality and with all the DRM built into the shell I doubt we'll ever get a decent explorer with mods only. Best to do as you're doing replace the whole damn thing. Does VS smooth scroll with kinetic flicks? If it's designed from the start to be attractive to programmers and customizers I could really see this taking off. I hope it'll be so boss that Microsoft pays you to implement it in their explorer as well.

yeah so i just got into the ivista customization movement and personnaly i think that your finder is the best out there so far. the people over at window's edge with their "ivista" guide is doing nothing more than skinning the OS i want apps to replace the native file browsers to not just give me the leopard look but the feel.
however there seems to have been a halt on your project...i can't seem to find any recent articles on the project. if you are at a halt you might want to look at a few open source projects like the flying cow browser (which has a coverflow-like feel...videos, jpegs and pdf's can be viewed) i read that you want to fully integrate the browser into windows ie...be able to view .doc, .docx, and other office formats...
you might want to look at the source code for universal viewer a freeware explorer app. good luck and keep me posted

amigo, realmente sorprendente tu trabajo!

Just please make it work with Vista (x64). Please, please, please...
It's great, and I'm too hate the standard, hard-to-customize windows shell.

fresh news! it's running in vista...
i'll post a screenshot very soon...
lastest tested features:
Instant previews of TXT, NFO, PNG, GIF, SWF, JPG, HTM, INI, INF, LOG, XML, CSS...
spotlight and timeview
now VSDesktop is a standalone file browser, explorer.exe isn't necessary (that was a problem with Vista) and includes sidebars and toolbars like OSX finder.
i'm working on copy-paste-delete files right now and it's all, then i'll upload the beta.

Thank you!
How much it is customizable (i mean custom buttons, colors etc.)?
I always wanted to make my own file browser - how hard it is? Which programming language you are using?

custom buttons, custom bars, toolbars, colors backgrounds, personalized icons..
interface is a very simple thing... drag and drop mode,something like toolbars in Firefox... or you can add your sourcecode... is a special lang, only for vsdesktop...
you can add codes in a special console.
Ej:
/////////////Toolbars and buttons/////////////////////////
Toolbar1 = NewToolbar([main],[width],[height],[x],[y],[color],[BackgroundFile] )
Button1 = NewButton([main],[width],[height],[x],[y],[color],[BackgroundFile] )
or
Button1 = NewButton(At[],w[],h[],x[],y[],color[],file[] )
or
Button1 = NewButton(At[],width[],height[],x[],y[],color[],file[] )
//////////////// ACTION FOR BUTTON ///////////////////
Button1.RollOver ( Filter[], File[], Action[] )
Button1.RollOut ( Filter[], File[], Action[] )
Button1.DragOver ( Filter[], File[], Action[] )
Button1.DragOut ( Filter[], File[], Action[] )
Button1.Press ( Filter[], File[], Action[] )
Button1.Release ( Filter[], File[], Action[] )
Filter: Glow(color) or fade(color,startAlpha,endAlpha)
File: png,jpg,swf,(gif?)
Action: Link("http://") or Execute("file://") i'm working on more filters and actions
( or menu -> add -> button )
then:
(From Console)
saveAll
or F12 -> save changes
VSDesktop buttons and toolbars can be png jpg gif or swf...
components are: Buttons, Radiobuttons, tree, infoCards, Lists, menu, Video, Audio, Pictures, MailReaders, Calculators, etc.

Code seem to be quite easy (big plus), and customizable enought for me.
So it's really great. I'm waiting for the relased app (or some betas).

VSDesktop project... is a set of miniapps. At this time VSDesktop Coverflow is running into explorer.exe in XP SP2...but is not compatible with VISTA ....
i want to make a standalone filemanager... the final idea is ... trash explorer.exe and let VSDesktop as default shell manager...
(PERSONAL NOTE: "i hate explorer.exe" )
