Description Another example of that early, older, batch of CG sketches. We have 2 more FOIL head concepts, these moving a little more into the feel the new stuff has. They’re both still reminiscent of familiar classic and modern mecha designs, and that’s ok to a degree I think overall as I have no problem tipping my hat to that a little. In the end I plan to keep pushing the new stuff into a familiar yet unique look and feel. The top one is obviously the illo I have used for my FOIL “boo!” Deviant Avatar I rather like the top one, it’s more dinosaur like which was is the primary inspiration for the base concept of the FOILs, everything launched from there and it’s always good when you arrive somewhere unexpected.

Digital Wacom paint.

Seems two FF comments, guess they must be vibing that look. I remember thinking the Bahamut's head, in the Advent Children film, looked as I had been thinking some of the FOILs might look so I guess I'm not surprised these were giving that impression. As I sated a few times though, it was pretty much Dinosaurs I was looking towards but I wouldn't be surprised if Dinos inspired the FF designs as well, it would make some sense.

I used to own the game but never finished it. That said it wasn't inspired by the game, pretty much dinosaurs were what I was looking at as I noted in the original posting

I love the first one, you've definitely got a dinosaur feel down. Really cool. Yeah, I used to be crazy about dinosaurs, and now I like mecha, and seeing this is just nice. ^^

Glad it's coming across. The stuff isn't going to be flat out Dinosaur I suppose but the notion of such a thing is going to be apparent in some of them. All in all the FOILs will have some interesting design ideas running throughout. has begun contributing some of his concepts and designs and as you see he has concepts with their own aesthetics and feel both similar and wholly uniquely differing to mine. I like the idea of having varied perspectives and aesthetics with a unifying theme. But ultimately these machines are like a hostile beast, a war mount so a dinosaur notion works to a large degree.

Right, but the inspiration you're bringing-- the same sense of awe that you get when you look up at the dinosaur skeleton and imagine the thing as it used to be, walking and breathing-- that sort of emotion can really bring a project to life.

Both of your stuff is amazing. *g* Makes me think I should post some of my own concepts, although they're not nearly as original or nice.

Well thank you again and I'm quite happy this stuff is inspiring others, it means I must be doing something right In all seriousness though inspiring others is truly one of the best things I think I can do as this stuff is all about imagination, fun. If it gets others to do the same, explore what's in their heads than I couldn't ask for more, that's a fantastic thing. Never belittle something you can do in the face of others that only have more experience into their work. Nothing I do can't be learned or done better by others Just give it your best, always be open to advice and self criticism (within reason as defeatism will get you nowhere) of the work and always be looking at everything around you for ideas, no matter how unusual. You never know what might spark that fire.

really cool. the second one is awesome
I’ve got some head skeches as well. I’ll put ’em up in my scraps section.

I’ll get back to you on the script when I’ve finished reading it. just got back home.

Cool, I take it you were away? Hope you had some good off time if so The script is still being tweaked, lines here and there and such but the core bulk of it is pretty nailed down. Things like battle scenes are usually shorthand as that stuff is pretty flexible when working on developing it unless it's a complex situation where you clearly need to be mindful of where combating parties are on the battlefield and any tactical considerations within reason. The battle in the first ep is pretty chaotic with no sense of direction due to the conditions they're embroiled in

It's great everyone seems to be diggin' these FOIL heads. The cool thing with the FOILs is the fact that the heads are all different so designing heads of varying types is a blast to do. Of course the designs have to fit the design style of whatever FOIL body and manufacturer they get stuck on but that’s an easy thing to do. Also the occasional nod to classic mecha designs is cool being that all the FOILs don't look the same, that bottom one certainly was more an old school nod in the face

Yes, there are a lot of things I haven't posted yet. As much as there have been a pile of mecha postings expect to see a lot of other things, characters, vehicals, locations and such.

very cool.

sorry, but i currently suck.
are these for/from your own storyline and ideas.

or are they just based on the things you needed to design for whatever/whoever you were working for?

Thank you a ton man I know some folks might see comparisons to other stuff out there but I really tried to shoot for a very organic bio-armor look to these things and they're only gonna keep going in those directions, weirder, if folks find them unique or unlike anything out there than hopefully I'm moving in the right direction.

By CG, do you just mean the digital-painting media you created them in? Or are they based on CGi maquettes (using the usual term of CGi, meaning 3D)?

Does any of your work get based on CGi models? As in used as a "scaffold"?

Very cool BTW.

VulnePro In reply to wunderbear [2006-01-31 09:55:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks again for the comments. Yeah, I should clarify as I have gotten used to some folks calling digital paints CG as well and really no 3D involved here, bad habit I got saying CG. The illos, all of them, are primarily fully painted right on my 9x12 Wacom Intous, no guides, just sketching em out. Strangely some of them have been looking 3D-ish but I'm not remotely as perfect as a 3D model would be and looking closely you will see things might be off to give that away. All that said these designs are concepts intended for realization in #D for the animation. if the show is 2D hand-drawn characters I would like for the mecha to be 3D so the designs can have the creative freedom to be as wild as possible. I plan to dip into doing some actual 3D modeling some time this year, time permitting so you might actually see some of this stuff in real 3D at that point
